In 2003, SARS was supposed to be a damn near extinction level event. In 2017, we had the Ebola outbreak. Fatality rates in the US? Zero lol

Yeah.

This is higher than the @WHO estimate of 1.4-2.5, but within the range reported for #SARS in 2002/3 (R0 2-5)

Hopefully. But quarantining 30+ million people ain't no joke. Although, this could just be a normal Friday in China.

I’m wondering what the real numbers in China are. They aren’t shutting down like this over a 900 cases.

Maybe if China wasn’t a filthy shite hole these things wouldn’t always originate from there. Research showing it started in their open air butcher markets and likely derived from bats like SARS was.

2nd confirmed case of the virus is in Chicago. This wasn't even on the radar like the aggie or the people in Cali that are being monitored. Maybe it was, but wasn't let to be known like the others?

Possibly.....maybe. No cure, no vaccine. Current kill rate of 1%+. That's not a high kill rate. The problem is the size of the Chinese population and the virus' ability to move quickly. If only 25% of the current Chinese quarantined population (40+M) get infected (10+M), you're talking a lot of deaths. If the virus were to truly go globally, then it could get very ugly very quickly with the poorest countries taking huge losses.

She has been in the US since January 13th. So she has probably come in contact with multiple people. If people in Chicago don’t start getting sick then I call this whole thing bullshite.

The good thing about Ebola is that it is extremely deadly and people die quickly so it is harder to reach pandemic level because everyone dies so quickly.

This virus isn’t particularly deadly but seems to be highly contagious. Only about 3% of people (so far) are dying from this virus but if 60 million people get it 2 million die. If 600 million get it 20 million die.

ETA the Spanish flu affected 3% of the global population. If this was the same you would expect 230 million infected and 7 million deaths.
