This strand, the Wuhan coronavirus, is new, but it is not some plague type virus. Media sensationalism is driving the "lethality" of it, and nothing more. It's akin to pneumonia or a respiratory infection. That's about it.

Except for the fact that because it is a completely new virus unlike new strains of the flu, our bodies are not as effective at fighting it. If you assume that the death count is close to accurate, but the infection count is off by a factor of say 3, that still makes this ten times deadlier than the flu (1% mortality rate vs 0.1% mortality rate).
The saving grace is that it appears that most of the mortality is occurring in the sick and elderly. I don't know if there should be panic, but if this virus is even just two or three times deadlier than the flu - that is a big deal.
