The Sun Belt is anything in the US below a certain latitude. From Atlantic to Pacific.

It’s what people in foreign countries sometimes refer to as the American South, because they don’t realize that there’s a Western limit to what’s considered the South. Like you can watch a Swedish TV channel and they’ll talk about how Los Angeles is a Southern city.

In my opinion there has never been a better time to buy low on the Midwest. Still has very low COL and affordable housing stock compared to most of the rest of the country. Excellent education and healthcare systems. Culturally very family oriented. You get used to the winters. We moved up here and it has been a comprehensive quality of life upgrade across the board. Yes the winters are cold but honestly you wear gloves and a coat and it’s not that big of a deal.

Literally everywhere in the US has pros and cons. Just gotta figure out somewhere your personal pros outweigh your personal cons.

If I was to move outside of the south, on my personal shortlist would be:

Annapolis, MD area
Boise, ID area
Colorado Springs, CO area
Portland, ME area

Northern Illinois. Don’t get me wrong I’m not trying to dump on the south by any means. I love Louisiana and I miss it a lot sometimes. But all I can say is for people with young families I really don’t think you can beat the low cost of living/high quality of life combo the Midwest has to offer right now.

everyone wants to live in a homogenous, safe, low COL area until it's time to live in a homogenous, safe, low COL area

Annapolis, MD area
-very expensive COL. Dramatically overrated unless you’re sailing or boating daily.
Boise, ID area
-Awesome
Colorado Springs, CO area
-what? Boring lowest elevation in the state, pretty much Kansas.
Portland, ME area
-Beautiful, but 8 months of winter.

I am into boating. And it's a beautiful area that gets all 4 seasons. Expensive COA, but no more so than Boise. Near family.

Its a beautiful area, just expensive.

Close to wife's family. Same lifestyle as Denver, just in a smaller city format. Both a "Great plains" cities but easy enough drive into the mountains.

Yeah winters are brutal. But you learn to get used to it, just like you get used to 8 months of summer in the south.

Like I said in my post - everywhere in the US has pros and cons. It's just about finding areas that have more of your pros than cons.

Also forgot to add - Salt Lake City area would also be on my list.
