Close to wife's family. Same lifestyle as Denver, just in a smaller city format. Both a "Great plains" cities but easy enough drive into the mountains.

With family involved and hearing your favorites. I would go with Colorado Springs. Never if I had the whole country to chose from, but yes if I had family nearby. Denver is awful but nice to be close enough to use it. Easy flights back to MS.

I have a distain for Annapolis. It’s very nice but the sacrifices just to live there are not worth it. Awful traffic.

Moving somewhere without family, when equal cities have family. That’s the tiebreaker.

You gotta live on top of a mountain in East Tennessee or something

That's just outside the sunbelt. We probably won't move from our current area - and if we did it would be over to the Carolinas somewhere. But if I was moving outside the sunbelt, those would be personally where I would look.

That’s why we have snowbirds that flee south for the winter.

Solid guess, though.

They had a poster on here that was saying how nice of a place Costa Rica was. I fancy I might try to end up there by the end of the year.

Moved from LA to MN a few years ago.

It was cool for a couple of years but after the novelty of living somewhere new wore off, it honestly sucks.

The winters are just brutal for someone from the South. And everyone keeps saying the past few winters have been mild. frick that, if this is mild then I don't want to see normal.

Spring is the worst because there isn't really a spring. You get a random mildly warm day that makes you pack your coat up, then 2 days later it's fricking snowing again.

Also, people are weird. Hard to mingle in this part of the country.

Not my first time living up north but I moved from AZ to Mackinac Island, MI last month and I'm freezing my arse off. It's still snowing at night.

We talked about honeymooning at Mackinaw in October but we’re a little afraid we’ll start hitting snow (first week).

What's the smallest population of a city you would deem acceptable?

Seems like you want to live in a city. Not really sure what Northern city can offer much more than a Southern city. They all have great things to do, and all have terrible parts.
Most Northern cities are losing population with some at least maintaining.
