I have no complaints outside of cuisine.

Winter, outside of the truly fricking cold breaks of -25 to -40, is entirely manageable and even pleasant at times - 15 degrees on a bluebird day is better than 45 and windy in the South.

People are very friendly and helpful, so long as you aren't a Coaster looking to tell them that they're living the wrong way. It is very obvious that there is a strong presence of community obligation, though it is waning, due to how demanding life out here used to be in order to survive.

Unfortunately, the price of real estate is a huge deterrent - if you want to live in or near a place with beauty and a semblance of civilization, you will pay heavily for it.

I could see living in Nebraska or Iowa. Love the people there. But Florida winters are to die for

Wait, you actually live on Mackinac full time? That’s kinda odd. Didn’t know there were too many full time residents there.

If I started looking for different work and relocating away from Tennessee I’d probably start with Boise, ID and the suburbs North of Indianapolis. The lack of humidity in the summer would be a welcomed sight but my first big snow in late April would probably leave me extremely depressed.

It's a pretty decent baseball conference. Have you been invited anywhere else?

Well, I'm on an island not the UP, so...
You can basically spit to St Ignace and it is in Mackinac County. Definitely part of the UP.

much like grand isle is technically a part of the new Orleans metro area... it's only technically part of the UP

no one from up there would say mackinaw island is the UP

Maybe those on the island wouldn't, but i lived in MI for 5 years and just called 5 buddies from around the state to ask their opinion. Every one of them said yes. Obviously, opinions vary.

1) Did happen
2) Grand Haven, Luddington, Wolverine Lake, Bay City, Lake Houghton. Take it for what's is worth. Maybe people up there don't think so, but seems a large portion of the state does.

And you can basically spit to Mackinaw City which is in lower Michigan.

I don't really give a shite about this weird insistence that Mackinac Island is part of the UP, so I’ll just continue believing an island separate from a peninsula is not magically also part of that peninsula, if that's ok with you fellas.

I have no opinion on the people of the Upper Peninsula, but the few guys I met from there were good dudes.

And if you actually activated a phone chain to poll Michigan residents on this question as you claim, I'm happy to call it UP in your presence if it brings you peace.

Why would you know this?

One of the best things about this island is no fast food or chains of any kind (minus a Starbucks, of course, that somehow got approved).

No cars is nice, too.

Home alone and bored. Honestly just wanted to get their opinions since they are all natives and I was a temporary transplant. Plus they are all Navy buddies, so any excuse to give them a quick call to check in on them is all good.

I don't actually care if the people there think they are or not.

We talked about honeymooning at Mackinaw in October but we’re a little afraid we’ll start hitting snow (first week).
I haven't been here in October yet but I imagine it will be chilly. The wind off the lake is what gets you, not the actual temp.

Well, in the short time I've been here, the islands status in reference to its relationship to the UP hasn't come up in conversation yet.
