Exactly.
Say a magical prophet appeared and told me that my best friend is going to die this year no matter what and nothing can stop it from happening. Then they asked if I wanted it to happen now.. or 4 months from now. Obviously, I'd want to prolong it as much as possible.
But then they told me that prolonging my friend's death 4 months will cause financial ruin for millions of people/businesses. I'd want to still have my friend, but it would be selfish to make that decision.
It sucks that high risk individuals are going to eventually die, but unless we stay totally locked down until a sure-fire vaccine exists.. it is going to happen. We should not be making decisions for the whole to save the few.

It's pretty crazy jumping from PT to Reddit and just seeing the different kinds of crazy that clogs each site

why, exactly?
Because knowing who is positive, even when asymptomatic, and tracing their contacts and isolating those people will greatly reduce the spread. Germany, South Korea and Vietnam, which borders china but has had very few cases, are examples of this working.

While each will scream up and down that they're sane and the other ones are crazy.

This is the entire point. If it is going to happen anyway, why are we further sinking the economy? Why wait until July to open up if we pretty much know July won't be any different than now? May as well do it now.
FWIW, I don't consider myself particularly liberal or conservative and seriously dislike the "sides" of issues.
I've posted this before in these threads, but the current means aren't based in an idea you can erase Covid. The idea is more (for reasonable people) to prevent a crisis point where death and spread is out of control or where it overwhelms our infrastructure.
I think there's a likelihood Covid is here to stay. As I've said before, though, herd immunity in the US is about 200-225 million people. There's a lot of spread that can happen and reasonable means to not have an unchecked spread aren't bad things.
Best case is we can get to a situation where those reasonable means don't impede the economy. That isn't necessarily normal, but it's what I'd like to happen as soon as it can.

so you think we can eliminate this virus?
SK is the international outlier and can't be replicated here. ignoring the fact that spread was going undiagnosed in mid-January (possibly earlier), SK is effectively an island the size of Missouri. also, to eliminate spread, SK will have to keep its borders closed
Germany has fewer infected/million, but there is still plenty of spread. Germany is just enacting a policy where they will have to deal with this for longer, too, by suppressing spread too much

that never happened and we are nowhere near that in any area currently, 3+ weeks after peaks in the bad areas (NYC, nola, etc)
we are so far below the curve we need exponentially more cases or risk this going on for years

It probably has a lot to do with who holds the presidency atm.
As well as which is currently pushing decreasing govt/getting back to work or increasing govt/continuing to stall economy. Its really not ironic for conservatives to trust when a govt says govt restrictions need to start being reduced and private businesses are essential & need to restart or for liberals to not trust a govt that doesn't want to continue to control them or especially just continuing their actions past 3.5 years of first finding out what Trump believes or is doing and then oppose it.

Yeah, and as a reasonable person, this has been a huge success here in the vast majority of the US. This is what the stay at home/work from home orders were sold on.
Now that we've achieved that, the argument has entirely shifted

There's still a great deal of unknown. We didn't overwhelm out healthcare system, but would reopening everything with no compromises just put as back on a path of mass infection and potentially overwhelm the system? Nobody knows for sure, but possibly. It's also possible that we open everything up and we manage, but I prefer we take the safer route of opening things up but adhering to CDC guidelines to help lower spread.

"Woefully" behind who?
Do we have to get up to the likes of Liechtenstein,Iceland, Ireland, Luxembourg, Estonia, Latvia, and so on in tests/ 1 million? At 13 400 tests per million of population We are knocking on Aruba's door in the tests per million metric (Watch out Bermuda your next).
or Does "woefully behind" only go away when we have the most tests and most tests per million before you find some other metric? You can't use S Korea for testing metric comparison or UK, Netherlands, Sweden, France, Finland, or even China (or your Vietnam with its 2,119 tests per million).
There is maybe 1 country that looking at total tests, tests per million, and both total cases per million & deaths per million that truly surpasses us in testing numbers - Germany - as they have tested around 1.8 times more per million of population than us so far while unlike Spain & Italy having lower cases per million and deaths per million than us (including probable cases like WoM) making that we have more than twice numbers of tests (almost as many total tests of Germany, Italy, and Spain combined) a lesser metric.
So why we could always do better and aren't sitting still I am just trying to figure out where your goal line is to stop labeling our testing as woefully behind.

Who said we have to compare to other countries? That's faulty logic.
When testing is widespread, up to date, and accurate enough to begin Trump's 3 step plan knowing your decreasing numbers are legit.

Then who are we behind which is what I was asking other poster. Although you did defend his comment earlier while now seemingly saying it's faulty logic.
So to stop playing your contrarian game give me a number for below.

my favorite are the ones who claim to be neither, but in the middle rather, their arrogance and self delusion are truly astounding.
