DENVER - Attorneys for a Colorado baker who refused to make a wedding cake for a gay couple on religious grounds - a stand partially upheld by the U.S. Supreme Court - argued in federal court Tuesday that the state is punishing him again over his refusal to bake a cake celebrating a gender transition.

Lawyers for Jack Phillips, owner of Masterpiece Cakeshop in suburban Denver, are suing to try to stop the state from taking action against him over the new discrimination allegation. They say the state is treating Phillips with hostility because of his Christian faith and pressing a complaint that they call an "obvious setup."

The Colorado Civil Rights Commission said Phillips discriminated against Denver attorney Autumn Scardina because she's transgender. Phillips' shop refused to make a cake last year that was blue on the outside and pink on the inside after Scardina revealed she wanted it to celebrate her transition from male to female.

She asked for the cake on the same day the U.S. Supreme Court announced it would consider Phillips' appeal of the previous commission ruling against him. In that 2012 case, he refused to make a wedding cake for same-sex couple Charlie Craig and Dave Mullins.

Wtf? He isn’t denying the tranny service, he is denying the tranny a specific request. If the tranny asked for another type of cake, he would bake it.

This is compelled speech, and we are better than this as a nation.

Shame on the tranny for choosing to go to this baker to cause drama. Denver is one of the most socially liberal cities in America: it would be very easy to find another baker to do your bidding.

Stop harassing this man!

this will probably end up like the gay wedding stuff. theyll find that the baker should not be forced into making this cake due to the first amendment

Dude,

He should have learned after the whole queer cake thing how to properly refuse service to someone.

"I'm sorry we're booked up, take your fricked up kid elsewhere"

Something like that.

Nah, he should have the right to run his business as he sees fit and work for whoever he wants. This was nothing but a planned setup.

Duh

And he should have had a planned strategy in place to refuse service to anyone that walks in the door that he doesn't want to do business with.

It really is easy to deny service to someone. I do it all the time.

frick the miserable man who thinks he's a woman. the accused should have his attorney's fees paid for and be handsomely financially awarded a settlement for harassment.

This is a set-up by the attorney. The plan is to ruin the baker financially.

Maybe we should take the people who want to deny this man his religious rights, drag them out in the street and horse whip them, then ask who would like to be next.

I’ve never donated to one of those go fund me things but I’d be inclined to for this dude. Let the guy bake his fricking cakes in peace.

ETA: he should bake them a loaf of bread and tell them it identifies as a cake

This is shakier IMO. If the objection emerged when they heard what it was for, but was fine with the request prior like the article portrays it....

The fact that it’s the same baker makes it an obvious set up though.

Where are all the libs that were supporting google's bias bullshite?

They will be coming in any second now and and supporting this baker's right to run his business how he chooses.

The tranny should just start up his own bakery right, libs?
