Even if we were to find another habitable planet, those who colonize it will eventually evolve into something different. And humans (homo sapiens) will no longer exist there.

Whatever scientists end up calling my great great great (1000X) grandchildren, I want those people to have a chance to exist, as opposed to not having one because people today didn’t see the point in trying to live off the planet so homo sapiens were killed off by a giant space rock or runaway volcanism.

Seriously, what has happened to people? Humans went to the moon simply because it was there, now we’re too lazy/nihilistic/dull to imagine anything else?

We will destroy a new one also. I'm not leaving Earth even if there was another planet to live on.

Go do some research on terraforming and get back to us

You type like an a-hole.

On topic: he’s not wrong theoretically. And, I am no global warming fearist

Try not being a prick…….seriously

Their greatest fear is that someone might succeed and leave them behind. So they will do everything they can to prevent others from trying.

This isn’t just for colonizing other planets. This is for any attempt at trying something ambitious.

Ayn Rand wrote a book on these people.

shouldn't we go to the moon first?

Considering we can’t terraform the places on this planet that are not as uninhabitable as other planets there is no way to terraform other planets. Get back to me when people actually colonize the interior of Australia or the terraforming of the great deserts begins.

Internet rumor is that the world population currently will fit entirely in Texas by volume and we still have parts of the planet unlivable (2/3 water we can’t yet live in or really on).

Interplanetary travel/living is a pipe dream for the next 1000 years at least. So how much taxation do you think we should have today over it? I say $0.

To explore space we will have to develop a radically different means of transportation that seems impossible to us now. I believe it is achievable.

Loading up a space ship to try and plant lettuce in a bubble on mars is a waste of time.

What kind of life would that be for humans to live in a bubble FOREVER or they will die.

Leftists live that way every day.

There’s a planet in the Alpha Centauri system called Proxima b that’s in the habitable zone. That’s our closest and best chance for a fresh planet

Say we aren’t alone in the universe. Wouldn’t it be a kick in the teeth if we found a habitable planet, found some way to get there, and then found out their version of humans already wrecked it?

All that work just to find a worse off earth.

Terraforming involves extreme disruption to the existing ecosystem. I realize that we do that already but we tend to avoid doing it unnecessarily.

Maybe. But in the early 1900s many people still thought man was thousands of years away from heavier-than-air flight.

I say more than $0. There are more payoffs than just the big one at the end. Many advancements happen in the interim.

A realistic colonization would require terraforming but we aren't even remotely close to the technology for that.

And once we have the tech for that we'll probably be better suited to solve our own problems here

The main reason to even think about going to other planets any time in the next 100 years is to harvest resources

All the people who think we should be doing this now are too stupid to realize they are basically neanderthals trying to prepare for Star Trek.

Humans are not even close to being a Type I civilization, yet we already have quite a few necessary minerals that are classified as "scarce". In order to progress to Type I and beyond, we have to seek out resources throughout the solar system. This begins with the Moon (which should be getting more emphasis) and Mars. Mars, while not naturally viable for humans, is adaptable, unlike Venus, which is far too hot. Mars will also serve as a jumping off point for accessing Jupiter and Saturn's moons. It would also be a base for accessing the massive amounts of raw materials in the Asteroid Belt.

What is fascinating is that humans born on the Moon or Mars could never actually live on Earth. Their bodies would develop in low gravity. They would be lighter and less muscular than Earth humans. Even blood pressure would be significantly reduced, and Earth gravity would cause blackouts and other symptoms of low blood pressure. Within as little as one generation, you would see true "Martians" or "Lunarians" develop.

To live on Mars, or the Moon, colonists will have to live underground to avoid hard radiation from the Sun and cosmic rays. The real treasure is in the asteroids. We need the valuable minerals in them.
To change the atmosphere on Mars will take multiple hits from comets that we can steer into the polar caps on it. The comets carry water ice that is needed to terraform Mars.
Interplanetary space travel for Mankind is necessary for us to survive and grow. Have you ridden the subways in New York City ?
