Are you serious?

The way to advance and perfect travel and survival beyond our plant is to travel and develop a means to survive beyond our planet.

What is going on here?

It'll never happen large-scale. Whatever will kill Earth will almost certainly kill Mars too

There may be resources on mars that can sustain our way of life on earth, or be used to power us on to the next planet. You are thinking in a shortsighted way.

What's the point?..... Probably the same question asked of every explorer over the last 3000 years

Ummm…you can do that, but you have to advance our understanding of survival in space.

In top of that, humans need gravity.

Why not create a sustainable network on the available planets in our solar system in order to allow for stops between points, especially on the ones with useable gravity?

Crossing the Atlantic- really what’s the point?

LOL…not remotely the same.

Exploring the planet that already sustains human life makes sense.

Going to a non human friendly planet in order to live makes no sense.

Short term we would need an artificial life system but long term it could be habitable, just need to melt the ice caps. Elon Musk said the quickest way to do it would be nukes on the ice caps. He’s smarter than everyone I know.

I think the temperature is tolerable for humans, it’s a really low temperature but the atmosphere is much thinner. That’s what Neil DeGrasse Tyson said. Not as smart, but still probably knows a thing or two.

Why?

The place is completely incompatible with humans living there.
To learn how to make a planet hospitable to human life. Duh.

Assuming we eventually need to leave earth (and the solar system), should we just search and search for a planet that is perfect, or just find one that's good enough and make it better for us?

I could see colonizing Mars if Mars were the next step necessary in getting humans to the next “earth” like planet on the galaxy or universe. However, there is NO EVIDENCE that such a place exists.
If we can colonize Mars, then colonizing a planet in another solar system seems more feasible, doesn't it?

Exactly.

The tech for this will likely occur after we are dead, unless there are major breakthroughs.

What is the quote? Society grows great when old men plant trees whose shade they know they shall never sit in.

So shortsighted.

You do realize that these stars are trillions of miles away and that even the most optimistic outlook on space travel and physics would put the travel time at somewhere between 50,000 - 100,000 years.

Real life ain't like a science fiction movie.

Yes, I am aware of that.

Despite the phrase used, the point is human expansion beyond earth.

Eventually the building of colonies on other planets within our solar system.

The moon
Mars

Figuring out how to use the resources outside of our planet.

The groundwork has to start somewhere.

This idea that it is too far in the future, so why should we even bother, is crap.

There are NO resources on Mars that can sustain life on it. There are also no other planets in the solar system that can help sustain life here. Once earth is done, humans are done.

This is the correct answer. Anything else is just science fiction.

I never said we would desert earth. But it would be nice to have the option if we have some type of major catastrophe looming or that happens.

So, your view is we shouldn’t even try?

That is a high school level, nihilistic view right there.

Pushing the boundaries of human exploration has always lead to vast human advancement. The space programs are no different.

Getting to mars, and then attempting to colonize will push human technological advancement.

The dinosaurs lived on Earth for over 160 million years. Humans, maybe 200000 years. Humans will go extinct at some point if we cannot leave earth. (We may do it to ourselves)
