Getting to mars, and then attempting to colonize will push human technological advancement.
No, no, no.

There is no purpose to that idea.

The self-defeatist mentality in this thread is mindblowing.

It’s a pipe dream. Kabuki theater.

When we have everyone on Earth with clean water and food, no homeless, crime under control, infrastructure that works, a civil society, etc. then maybe try to get there with a man one time. Won’t happen in my lifetime. And it shouldn’t.

We need a backup planet. Eventually either we or the robots will destroy this one. The future of the human race will be lab grown, Martian Zuckerberg DNA.

We will surely need spaceships that can support life indefinitely too. So what? There are lots of problems to solve, what's wrong with working on the ones we can right now? If no one gets started then it will never happen.

Maybe we will figure out suspended animation. Maybe we will just have to live life as normally as possible on a ship for many generations. Whatever the case, it seems likely that before the first ship we send arrives at its destination, we will have improved technology here on earth and later launches can catch up to the first. Or, pass it by and start terraforming the destination before they arrive.

Or maybe they will all go crazy and die. That happens to explorers sometimes.

Uhhh it seems a whole lot easier to just terraform Mars.

Start where you can. Mars is a great starting point.
you freaking people need to put your little brain power into staying out of hell instead of getting onto mars.

This isn’t a “home computer” will never take off 1980s line.

This is about traveling to other universes and galaxies.

This isn’t an advancement that will not happen. Tower of Babel type vibes.

Estimates for one version of Project Orion (a nuclear powered spacecraft looked at in the 60’s) estimated travel time to Alpha Centauri in ~500 years. With advances in the next few hundred years (propulsion, cryogenics) who knows what’s posssible.

Mining valuable minerals. The environmental wackos not exist on Mars yet.

Seems the moon would be easier. Too bad it is made up mostly of gases.

Elon wants to prolong consciousness as long as possible. I’m with Elon. He’s probably smarter than you.

Feel free to die off with the rest of the nihilists. But don’t prevent other humans from trying to advance humanity. Or at least providing for a Plan B should we encounter an existential threat to this planet. It’s logical for people to have backups.

Oh and the “earth must be a perfect Utopia before people can try cool shite” can frick right off. You are the problem.

That’s not remotely close to what I said.

Humans will go extinct regardless.

Even if we were to find another habitable planet, those who colonize it will eventually evolve into something different. And humans (homo sapiens) will no longer exist there.

And when we are gone here, we will be GONE.

That’s doubtful humans will go extinct in your scenario. In the event that Mars gets colonized, tech will obviously exist for humans to live in spaceships and space stations. Sure. It is possible the ones that colonize Mars may eventually mutate into a new species.

If human beings don't start working on space exploration, colonization and travel, we have zero future. We may be primitive as hell, but this is one endeavor we all need to see clearly.

On a timeline, humans will absolutely not make it due to a self-destructive nature.

We must move outward.

Yeah it only takes 32000 years to get there at 80000 miles per hour

Funny you say that.
What were science fiction movies like 80 years ago?
40?
Anything in those movies come true?
