Don't say your kids (especially daughters, given the list) didn't know ahead of time.

I told my kids that they would have to work their whole lives so they may as well pick a job that pays well.

Telling of how the country values its future generations?

No wonder so many teachers are fiddling kids. No diddle in their compensation.

That’s because those are women’s jobs.

I wouldn’t take out huge loans for it or anything but I think people who solely look at college in terms of monetary ROI and a job training program are missing the point of it

Nope. It's telling of how easy it is to get that degree. If fewer people could teach, they'd be paid more.

I always wanted to coach/teach. My grandmother who taught for 33 years is the one that steered me away. That's always my answer when friends say teachers should be paid more. Yes I agree, they should. EVERY SINGLE ONE OF THEM WENT TO COLLEGE KNOWING THE PAY SUCKS. It's not as though this was a surprise.

It sucks less in many school districts in TX, but life is about choices. I was at LA Tech when someone first told me that education was an MRS degree (you're only there to get married to stop working when you have a kid.) Nothing in the last 30 years has proven this wrong.

Caleb Hammer's channel (Financial Audit) reveals how dumb people are (including going back to Gen X) WRT to education.

This infographic explains so much of what’s gone wrong in this country. Education comprising the least lucrative paths one could take. Unbelievable.

The average base salary for public school teachers in Louisiana is approximately $54,248 to $59,500. When accounting for benefits, the total compensation package rises to an estimated $75,000 to $85,000+ per year, as benefits typically add about 30-40% to the base salary.

For 37 weeks of work a year

And they can retire at 30 years with 75% of their salary.

So they can retire at 53 with 30 years, and bring in 50k a year till they’re fricking dead.

The pay ain’t bad. And the retirement is one reason why, when Dave Ramsey studied millionaires, teacher was in the top 3. Do the math on what you have to be worth to make 50k a year for 30 years till you’re dead.

I’m pretty cynical when it comes to this, in that most teachers are in it for just this alone. Yeah there are other things they enjoy about it, but if not for the retirement they’d just stay at home.

There’s a ton of people that are “teachers” that can’t teach.

For me, no. It’s not a surprise. But I was raised by two teachers and the dollar went much further then. I grew up firmly middle class. I wasn’t able to predict a recession, further inflation at a rate that outpaced any pay raises, etc. That’s my issue. But…as a state employee, it is what it is.

The profession needs to be restructured. You can’t expect to attract loads of smart people wanting to teach with that pay. You also can’t expect bright minds to apply to be teachers when more and more kids come from broken homes with no rules, and parents that no longer think they need to reinforce learning throughout the day. Then again, more single moms and married women are working when the kids are home. Add in the fact that parents really don’t want schools to teach their kids, and we have a huge issue with the profession.

I’m at the point where I want to see mass homeschooling, not because I think it will be successful, but because it might push people to think that the value of a great teacher should matter.

What's truly incredible is that no one has ever pretended they didn't know this. Ever. Not once.

You must not be around many teachers. Coaches are there 12 months out of the year, it never ends. They truly deserve exponentially more money. Your normal classroom teacher though? They complain non stop about pay while working 180 days out of the year. Then as illustrated previously in this thread, get retirement for 30+ years at 75%. Maybe if they worked until 65 the difference in that money could be paid over their careers.

No, what's truly incredible is that you act as though teachers don't CONSTANTLY demand higher pay even though they work part time jobs and studies indicate that they are no more likely to take work home than their private sector counterparts in middle management.

No, it didn't. There was an increased use in take out.

There is so much bullshite in your statement that sounds like union talking points. When you send your kid to kindergarten that isn't potty trained, and doesn't know how to use any type of scissors, that's the fault of money and the teachers, right?
