Education comprising the least lucrative paths one could take. Unbelievable.
Why is it unbelievable?
The fact is that teaching regular, average students is not that hard, provided that your students have parents who support their learning.
Case in point, the Amish middle school girls teach the younger elementary students and those kids consistently score at the top of the standardized tests in those states.
On the other hand, students whose parents do not value or support education are relatively unteachable no matter what you do, so the quality of the teacher is largely irrelevant to them as well.
Teachers of average students in an American society that has bought into public, universal, mass compulsory education are basically babysitters.
There are exceptions for teachers teaching AP or advanced classes, but again, the teacher doesn't have to be an exceptional teacher, just competent, because the students are motivated. They need to be well versed in the subject matter, but they don't need to be great at teaching it. Just competent.
Teaching is not worth much because the skills set required to perform adequately in that context is abundant.

Coaches are there 12 months out of the year, it never ends. They truly deserve exponentially more money.
You want to pay school employees more because they take on a task that has nothing to do with education?

Yep. A teacher with a decent state pension is pretty much already a millionaire right now in the same sense that someone is a millionaire if they have over a million in their retirement account…lots of flexibility for teachers once they turn 52-55 if they can make it that long

Yeah the pay of being a teacher sucks, but the schedule while having a family can’t be beat. Off all holidays, off for the summer, you don’t have to worry about getting people to watch your kids.
It’s about more than money sometimes

They need to add OT and PT to that list. They should never require a doctorate for those degrees.
They come out making <80k a year for >120k in debt typically.

Well, those jobs definitely need to happen for the sake of our existence as a society so I wouldn’t $hit on it too much. Yes, they may not pay the most, but it is one of the most important professions. They do get all the major holidays off and a full 2 months off in the summer so there’s some relevance of lesser pay because of that. I would encourage that if being an educator is someone’s passion, then go do it. Get the additional degrees that might get you more salary (phd, graduate, etc).

I member seeing these graphs 30 years ago. The careers haven't changed but the pay started in the 20ks

Mid-career median salaries.
How about posting starting salaries? I have the top 20 and bottom 20 starting salaries for majors posted in my high school science classes. There are none, none, above $30,000. Why pay $120,000 for a four year degree at a state university to get a job that only pays $30,000?

The pay ain’t bad.
Teachers in most states have a built in salary schedule that rises with additional education.
Also, if a teacher is worth a shite, they can apply to districts that offer stipends.
And a teacher can get nationally board certified for an additional $5000/year.
In Alabama, year 12 with a bachelor’s degree makes $54k/year.
In my district, year 12 with an EdD and national boards makes $87k/year.
Many universities around the country offer a 5th year master’s program. This is where a student earns a bachelor’s in a subject—say English—and then takes an additional year of education courses to get a master’s. There are many online programs that are cheap to get an EdD, and it takes around three years for around $30k.
I would advise any new teacher to follow that plan.

If you're not looking at ROI, you deserve a Darwin award.

I’d say if they just looked at the available undergrad degrees from NYU or Columbia this list could be 50 things long

Ah yes, that $500 pay increase and if I want to tack on another 10k in debt I can get a Master's degree that will earn me an additional 1500 a year.
quote:let's drive an hour away to another district for that additional 500-1000 a year stipend.

Add a masters it is 60k, add a +30 it is 60.4k, make it a doctorate it is 62.5k

Thank you for the laugh!
This just isn’t the reality in 2026 for a huge portion of teachers.

Most of them. You could argue many college degree programs are a scam.

They are at best, a very poor investment. My wife probably spent more on college than she's earned in paychecks since graduating.
Fine arts education is a staple of wealth and first world existence so it doesnt need to die and go away or anything, but intelligent people would do well to leave that kind of stuff to wealthy people who can afford to spend a couple hundred stacks on a kids education just for the sake of saying they have one. Middle class people going to college for pointless degrees is a tremendous drain on the middle class.
A shitload of these kids need to be going to trade school, the military, or work right after high-school.

It's telling of how easy it is to get that degree.
I'm going to agree here. Just look at most college class schedules. For almost every subject matter there is a Statistics for Educators, Microbiology for Educators, Organic Chem for Educators, etc.... These are all more forgiving than the regular class.

One thing about education is they need to specialize, if you want to be a history teacher get a history degree, etc. that way it isn't like a general studies degree that anyone could get. Instead they are trying to remove the one thing (Praxis) that separates teachers from just anyone else. Once they successfully remove that then teachers will have no leg to stand on for raises as there are no certifications to separate from someone with just a degree.
They've already lowered the standard where they are allowing those with two year degrees into teaching programs.
