Old mate from St Catherine sent me these pics earlier today. Trying to get him up and running on TD. Said it’s mostly been off and on rain but has started to pick up.

The island has already gotten a lot of rain (loosens the soil) and a day or two of 20-40 mph winds to weaken trees. This is going to be insane. Hope it landfalls in an unpopulated area.

241 mph wind gust is something that will catch your attention if you are sitting in Jamica right now.

Kingston Harbour cam won’t last much longer

I’ll be surprised to see if that flat bridge makes it through it

A few I follow canceled their trips knowing how dangerous it would be and how tough it will be to get out.

If there’s any sliver of good news, the hurricane force winds on extend out like 30 miles from the center. That might allow Kingston to avoid getting into the sustained hurricane force winds. There will be some gusts to hurricane force there, though.

I keep seeing things on FB about people from places like the Midwest that are stuck there because they were vacationing and flights out got cancelled. I think I'd have left a week ago. This is the kind of storm that destroys airports and docking facilities. Even if you survive the storm you could be stuck for weeks in poor conditions.

Jeff is there

I wouldn’t want to be there with a marine expeditionary force when this thing hits. Choosing to go without a clear means of leaving afterwards and without heavy security makes you a major target for robbery, kidnapping or violence.

Jamaica is not a particularly safe place anywhere outside of your resort, when people have starving children to feed all bets are going to be off.

If you rewind that Flatbridge camera to the beginning you can really see how much the water has risen in the last few hours.

I'm fairly sure Treasure Beach is going to get mostly destroyed. I hope everyone is far inland on high ground and as safe as can be.

quote:

Treasure Beach is the name given to a stretch of five Jamaican coves and their associated settlements: Ft Charles, Billy's Bay, Frenchman's Bay, Calabash Bay and Great (Pedro) Bay. Treasure Beach is known as the home of Community Tourism and is devoid of any all-inclusive establishments. Density restrictions don't allow for large hotels and the beaches are all public. [2]

The region is isolated from the main tourist areas and the minor roads connecting with the main highway at Black River or Santa Cruz tend to suffer damage in heavy rain, but are usually passable with care.[3] The roads have being rehabilitated and are now better than previous years. There are numerous small hotels and guest houses serving tourists seeking a very quiet seaside location.[2]

Hurricane Beryl hit the villages on July 3, 2024 and caused a great deal of damage to the area.

If Beryl caused bad damage while passing about 20 miles offshore, this will be real bad there.

The highest mountain peak in Jamaica is 7400 feet, which ranks only as the 6th highest peak in the Caribbean, yet is higher than any mountain on the Eastern half of the US mainland.

Good folks come together in times like this, Jamaica will recover.

Some years ago one of them absolutely flattened Grenada. I was working at Pepsi in Trinidad (next door island and we had sent help) One of the younger girls at work called in and said she would be off for the day, her husband was in special forces, had just come back and she had to take care of something. Odd I thought.

She comes to work and said what she had to take care of was a baby boy her husband brought back! Seems he was organizing clearing a road, a woman with a newborn saw his wedding band, approached and said "I have nothing, no diapers, no baby formula, house gone and we spent the night in a car. Take the child and Ill come for him when things settle down".

About a week later she came in the office, said she was taking the afternoon off, Trinidad had arranged for her to fly over, get the child and go home. She said I told her she bess hurry Im getting very fond of the little one.
