Any chance this venue didn't allow an open bar? It's alabama so nothing would surprise me.

IF it was a choice, I would rather they just choose to do beer and wine only, or no alcohol at all. I've been to both of those kinds of receptions, and it's fine.

Hell, I went to one a couple of months ago, was two 19 year olds getting married, the ceremony was outside a barn and the reception inside one, the reception was water, lemonade, and snacks, basically.

I've only been to one plated-dinner wedding reception in south Louisiana (I've been to many in other states where this is more the norm)

Anyways, couple divorced after two years. Bad omen!

I find it weird to be at something that is meant to feel as formal and carry plates of food around, search out seating, etc.

Although you always expect there to be food, I guess I just don't think of it as a dinner party. And that's because it's just what I'm used to. The food is there so you don't get hungry while at the reception. Tables are there for when you need to sit down for a minute. Otherwise, get out there and drink, dance, socialize. I've been to a few $100k plus weddings and can't imagine how much slower of a pace it would be to be forced to be stuck at a table with assigned people waiting for food. I'm not saying that to be critical, I really just couldn't imagine how that would be since I've never been to one.

If everyone in this thread actually had to pay for the whole wedding, tuxes, dresses, venue, licenses, booze, photography etc...I’m guessing there would be a lot more cash bars or boozeless weddings.

When mom and dad fork out the cash people have no clue what things actually cost.

Our reception will have free beer, wine, Tito's, and Jack Daniels. If you want top shelf you have to pay for it. Is that trashy?

My FIL bought like 3k worth of Beam, Stoli, Boxed Wine and Domestic Beer and told everyone to go HAM. Worked out a deal to return the unopened stuff to the store and had 3 of his buddies bar tend.

Worked out well. Everyone got hammer drunk for free and there was a tip jar. I had a secret stash of imports for me and bottle of blanton's for the wife to drink and me to take shots.

Cash bar is trashy. If you can't afford it, choose another venue or do it yourself.

Never been to one with only a cash bar. Went to one that was open bar for wine and beer, but cash for liquor drinks. I knew the bride's father pretty well, and he said the cost difference was alomst $10k for full open bar. Said they charged a flat rate for it regardless of how much people drank, and his daughter and the groom were fine with just beer & wine. Nobody there seemed to mind.

I hate going to weddings, so I try not to judge people's choices on how their wedding and reception are conducted.

was waiting for this post, just something about Catholics and getting drunk at the Wedding. One of the biggest drunks I was ever involved in was I Them catholics could lay it down!

The Priest at my local church has a rule, if you, bride or groom, show up for the wedding drunk and he detects it, he will not perform the ceremony and walk out. If your a wedding party member, he asks you to leave the ceremony.

At my wedding we are only doing Wine and beer and two cocktails you can choose from. Rest is cash. I’ve seen too many idiots take advantage of a open bar and act a fool the entire night. One spilt his drink all over the bride right after drunkenly running into someone holding red wine which went all over the brides dress as well.

Priest that did my best friend's wedding years ago had that same rule, and read us groomsmen the riot act at the rehearsal.

We just smoked w33d before it instead. Worked out well.

OP mentioned that the wedding party had a couple of drink tickets each to use at the bar.

Could OP have had drink tickets that came with the invitation and he didn’t realize what they were?

the answer to that question is NO!!!!

the groomsmen/bridesmaids and the bride/groom got envelopes with their tickets...

and this was more of a question of have you experienced such a wedding because it was WAY out of my cultural norm!!!!

Most traditional nice wedding venues don't allow you to "do it yourself" in regards to alcohol. Would be too much of a huge liability to their establishment to let someone just roll up with their own alcohol and have their cousin bar tend. The venue would rather have their own staff tending bar, staff they know is trained and has the proper licenses to serve alcohol. Also...the venue knows alcohol is a huge money maker for them. No way they aren't gonna take advantage of that for the events they host.

OP said the venue was nice...likely the type of place that is very strict in regards to their food and alcohol packages.

Why do the cash bar option here? Seems must less tacky just to have the wine, beer, two select cocktails.

I browse a couple of wedding shaming groups on fb. People from all over the world post in them. Cash bars have been mentioned many times and it is a regional thing. Some areas of the world it is considered the norm. Would have many women posting that they had never been to a wedding where the alcohol was free.

Literally addressed everything you posted by saying "choose another venue". By saying that I acknowledged that id does depend on the venue, but if you can't afford the $$ to make it free for guests, or if they don't allow anything but a cash bar, then maybe choosing another venue would be advantageous.

Plenty of weddings are wine and beer with a cash bar for mixed drinks.

You entitled fricks need to pull up your panties and just deal with it.

Never been to one of these.

I've never been to a cash bar or alcohol-free reception in fact.

I would not attend the latter. I'll go to any wedding, but I'm not going to some sober dance party reception. Screw that

If is a large wedding, (and you've invited a dozen or so lushes and their SO's) a cash bar, with written cut-off instructions to management, is a smart move.

If a lush drives off shitfaced because of your open-bar-generosity, the limits of your insurance may not begin to cover your liability - if he plows in to someone at 70 or 80 mph.

Welcome to the world we live in.

Point is...why do they HAVE to choose another venue to meet your expectations? It is their wedding after all. Again...different people have different wedding budgets and different priorities.

Maybe the venue is known for great food and they prioritized good food over alcohol? Or maybe bride and groom and majority of their family are just not big drinkers so alcohol isn't a priority to them at all.

The bride and groom do not HAVE to provide you with free alcohol. All they have to do is provide you with a meal if the reception is during a usual meal time. Anything else is a bonus.
