If the options were cash bar or no bar, I would vote cash bar.

the groomsmen and bridesmaids all got tickets for free drinks at the bar...the regular guests had to pay...

this was a family member of mine and I would have gladly offered to hook them up with wine and champagne as a present from me...but I'm also quite sure the venue wouldn't have allowed it...

So if you were a guest...you would rather there be NO alcohol available whatsoever at the reception instead of having to pay for it?

If I were a guest, I would find my own booze if I wanted some. It's tacky as hell to charge money at your wedding. Either have it for free or don't have it. Only exception would be free beer and wine with an option to purchase spirits.

Plenty of weddings are wine and beer with a cash bar for mixed drinks.

Yep. Totally normal.

If you are charging people for Diet Coke that's one thing, but charging for liquor is not unheard of at all.

Tacky. You throw an event like that at least cover some natty lite at the bar.

I would say it's far better not to have any alcohol than charge for it.

Meh, maybe so but people do what they can and we aren’t all alike. Had a neighbor growing up that lived with her parents until she was 50, worked at K&B and met a guy. Rented her wedding dress from Sears for $59.00 and was so proud of it you just couldn’t help feeling for her. They had the reception in the parents carport and my dear mother made platters of finger sandwiches for them. They put out Chek Colas and a couple bottles of K&B Bourbon.

To be honest it was one of the best weddings I’ve been too. Of course I walked across the street to hit the old man’s liquor cabinet but what the hell-she was proud and they are still married.

If I invite someone to my wedding, they shouldn’t have to pay a dime.

And now you can't even take your wedding gift back if the happy couple pulls this trick.

frickers get everything mailed direct now. Did not know this. I was the ONLY person to show up with a wedding gift in hand at a reception recently. 'Hey, where's the gift table?'

Quit being a bitch.

People don’t need to pay for you to get drunk.

I don't mind something like that, but that's an exception, not the norm

Some people just have different priorities when it comes to weddings. Maybe most of the guests aren't big drinkers to begin with?

Only thing the bride and groom need to provide for guests is a meal if the reception is during a normal meal time. Otherwise...it's up to what the bride and groom have decided they can afford/want for their wedding.
