Only thing the bride and groom need to provide for guests is a meal if the reception is during a normal meal time. Otherwise...it's up to what the bride and groom have decided they can afford/want for their wedding.
They can choose what they want. It's their day. It's still tacky, though.

chill out please, I wasn't overly bothered, but it was something new to my experience, like the poster talking about the carport reception, I've been to small weddings where there were soft drinks and you had to get your own beer out of the keg...

I always have an ice chest in my truck when going to a reception just in case.

You don't have to, just skip the drinks.
Don't get me wrong. I love a great wedding with endless food and alcohol, but it also isn't the end of the world if they charge you for alcohol. I went to a dry wedding in January and guess what, it was still fun.

While not “wrong” it’s pretty inconsiderate of your guests. I don’t drink. At all and very opposed to it. But we had alcohol at our wedding because so many of our friends and family do.

I made almost 4 grand off the cash bar at my wedding. Thanks friends and family

It’s a good move to try to keep the dumbassery at a minimum. Some people just can’t handle their alcohol. My SO decided she only wants to serve beer and wine. No hard liquor except for myself and select friends who will have access to my ice chest.

True, always be prepared.

Like many things I’m still confused on where the OT stands on overspending on weddings

Maybe most of the guests at this wedding aren't big drinkers to begin with? If so...is it still inconsiderate?
I made sure to have plenty of alcohol at my wedding. Ended up with wayyyyy more than I ever needed. Hell I sent guests home with unopened bottles of wine and liquor and donated the leftover beer, water, and soda to the airforce base nearby(one of our guests is Airforce and still had friends in the area that he knew would gladly take it off our hands). We weren't gonna fly back home with it so gave it away instead.
But..that was my choice cause I knew like 90% of my guests drink.
Point is...there is more than one way to have a wedding reception. People have different budgets and different priorities for their weddings.

At that point I would have made a beer run to the closest gas station to load up. They wanna play trashy, I will play trashy.

I never considered a cash bar though the venue gave it as an option. My problem was deciding on a one lump sum open bar vs a per drink count. When I considered that my daughter and son in law were both college graduates with tons of friends who made up a majority of the 175, I went with one lump sum all u. An drink and did my share to get my moneys worth.

And, let’s be honest. At that point, they have no shot.

We had 250 people at my wedding we paid for beer and wine.
No way in hell was I having a full open bar.
If you are only there for the bar why even show up?

It all depends on the first few posts of the thread. Then everyone decides how they feel.

I'm sure everyone enjoyed the Boone's you provided.

I normally don’t ever join in the usuals chorus of “that’s trashy” on here. In fact I can’t remember the last time I did. But a cash bar at a wedding reception? Yeah, that’s trashy.
