Can’t sleep if I don’t drink enough alcohol.
Anyone else have problems not staying asleep if you don’t get a couple drinks down at night? Fricked up and only drank 1 beer tonight, and I woke up at 11:30 thinking about work. I guess it’s not too bad since I got emails, billing and the scheduling done for next week.

You're either an alcoholic or nothing is wrong with you and you're fine.

I suspect alcoholism but then again, what the frick do I know?

ETA : Also consider that you can't drink enough alcohol if you don't sleep. Positive thinking like this will keep you well motivated.

Can’t sleep either. Work always on mind. I’ve got to learn to quit thinking about it so much.

Should smoke some weed. Not a ton, just enough to make you cough a little.

Or listen to a podcast about a story you already know with some earbuds in. Great distraction.

Work will still be there when you get up in the morning so why worry about it at night?

I always read the OT before going to sleep. Takes my mind off my issues.

Check out the book "Why We Sleep" by Matthew Walker. It's a great read. Amazon

Walker also had a good appearance on JRE. YouTube

Here's a write-up citing his book that explains what you're experiencing and why you might not be getting the best sleep.

quote:

Alcohol negatively affects sleep in a couple ways. Paradoxically, many use alcohol as a sleep aid, as they perceive it helps them fall asleep. This may be true, but according to Walker, “alcohol sedates you out of wakefulness, but it does not induce natural sleep”. Rather than aiding in solid sleep it is more similar to a mild form of anesthesia. You may seem to fall asleep more quickly but the sleep you do get is littered with “mini-awakenings.” You may not remember waking up multiple times throughout the night, but you will likely not wake up feeling refreshed, even if you got a full night’s sleep.

Beyond the “mini-awakenings,” the second downside of alcohol is its impact on REM sleep, and, more specifically, its downstream effects on cognitive function, learning, and mental health. Walker lets us know that alcohol is one of the most powerful suppressors of REM sleep that scientists know of. According to Walker, “People even consuming moderate amounts of alcohol in the afternoon and evening are depriving themselves of dream sleep”.

It would help to know how much you drink, but it sounds like you are going into withdrawals. Serotonin levels are readjusting and a person’s mind is trying to resolve the issue (alterations in neurotransmitters or excitable CNS). This is a pretty common occurrence for alcoholics or heavy/daily drinkers to experience something like what you are describing (You May not be those things, but it’s common for others I have described).

Racing thoughts and heavy anxiety awaken them when alcohol begins to wear off (possibly night sweats if their condition is bad enough). They either stay awake for a while until the body can readjust or drink to make feelings go away (removing ability to distinguish true from false of what their reality is).

If it’s a common occurrence then there are programs that can help those who want help.

You probably already know this, but always good to hear from others, which is why I assume you are posting it here.
You need to put the drink down for a while and get your body reset. If you aren't able to do that for your health and well-being, you are an alcoholic and need to get help doing it. Good luck and best wishes in getting healthy

Uh, who wants to dream about Michael Stipe and the rest of those fags. I’ll gladly trade my liver if it will suppress that.

So how much alcohol are you really drinking? A few beers a night isn’t going to give you that anxiety so bad it wakes you up

Actually, I quit drinking because I have exactly the opposite problem--I can always fall asleep easily, but if I've been drinking, I wake up after ~2hrs and can't go back to sleep.

Just start tonight. Quit drinking. If you don’t sleep well, you can still have a decently productive day at work tomorrow. Then you will probably be so exhausted that by tomorrow night or definitely Saturday night you will pass out and get the best sleep you’ve had in a while. This will put you on the path. Don’t take any naps and don’t lay around the couch. Work in your yard Saturday, go fishing, bike riding, whatever you like to do. The point is keep active and don’t give in to the misery. Your body will get accustomed to not having the alcohol to fall asleep in a couple weeks.

Go to your personal care physician. Explain your sleeping problem. He or she can help. Insomnia is a thing and no doctor treats it with alcohol.

Damn. I just thought I had a lot on my mind.

Sometimes I drink daily and sometimes I might go 2 weeks without a drink. Usually drink 2-3 beers in the afternoon to I might drink 2-3 mixed drinks. Just depends on if I’m around friends or not. I hardly ever drink alone, or let me put it this way I can’t remember the last time I did.
