Blah blah blah you're destroying yourself. There is no nice way to put it and no one on this board is going to help you without saying painful things.

The person I mention was my brother. He's dead now. Help yourself or you will also die. There is nothing else I can say.

They say 2 drinks a day is actually healthy as it lowers stress levels, 3 drinks a day and you're an alcoholic. It's a very fine line.

No offense, but your OP was at 3:00 a.m. on a Thursday morning. No one is blowing anything out of proportion... you have an alcohol problem.

Damn man. Haha I think some of y’all are blowing this shite out of proportion. I said 2-3 beers or 2-3 mixed drinks.
The only thing I'll add to this is that as an alcoholic I'm very familiar with the "only 2-3 mixed drinks" rationale. You might be one of those people carefully measuring out your drinks but the difference in what is actually considered "1 drink" and what I was actually pouring was substantial. Not saying that's you but you know if it is.

My amateur suspicion is that you have an anxiety and insomnia problem you're treating with alcohol, which is more or less creating a chemical dependency on alcohol. Probably not what most people think of as alcoholism, but still, not great.

My wife wakes up in the middle of the night and works for a couple of hours all the time too. Melatonin has helped in the past, but I think more than anything exercise, a set schedule and strict rules about phones makes the most difference. When she wakes up and her phone isn't there, she goes back to sleep. When it is, and she gravitates toward reading some emails she's going to deal with tomorrow, she's up for 3 hours. Then you're in a cycle of anxiety and sleep deprivation that just snowballs.

My "bullshite" statement was directed more at those who perpetuate studies about how "a drink a day is good for you." I see the point you were making. People who "drink a glass of red wine for the antioxidants" would be much better served drinking a glass of green tea.

Alcohol usually gives me insomnia. I sleep like shite when I drink beer or wine.

None taken. It wasn’t because I was drinking, though. It was because I couldn’t sleep. I had too much on my mind between work, getting married Saturday, being gone for a week on honeymoon, I just had to get tested for COVID today(luckily it was negative) and remodeling a new house while getting the old house on the market.

What I meant by that was if I don’t drink a couple drinks to knock the stress down I can’t sleep for long because I wake up and can’t stop thinking about everything I have to do. Before I had all of this happening at once I could sleep through a tornado.

Most replies were helpful, and I’m thankful for y’all’s experiences and warnings.

There is a root to your problem and ‘drinking to sleep’ ain’t it. That will not help you in any way. Learn to turn work off. If you’re working from home, separate yourself from work and from home life. I go for a walk, a long walk walk after stressful days and that helps me tremendously. When I return from my walk, I’m not at work anymore. It took that for me to separate the two. Go for a drive, go to Home Depot, throw a ball with your kids, if you have them. Call a girl, they’ll talk your head off. Do something before this gets worse, then you really won’t be able to sleep. Problems compound with alcohol.

This is really good advice.

Opposite here, even one drink after ~8pm fricks up a whole night's sleep.

That's called alcohol dependence, my friend. It happened to me, and it happens to the best of us. There is no shame in it. But I guarantee that you will be less stressed--and will be able to better deal with everyday stressors--if you quit drinking. Hell, I loved drinking. I was on the verge of fricking up my life so I made the choice to stop.

Good point. I never thought of it in that terminology.
