My adult brother rode it earlier in the season and said the Velcro harness came undone and had to hold onto the belt with his hands the rest of the way down to keep from flying off the raft. This is unfortunate. Velcro is actually really good for stuff like this.
Velcro seems like it would be a terrible choice for this. Why wouldn't they use normal buckles that can't just come undone on their own?

Velcro is actually a very good choice, as long as it's not worn out. Regular buckles and a water slide aren't usually a good combination. Let's say the raft flips over in the pool at the end and the buckle gets stuck. Then you're looking at a possible drowning.

NASA uses velcro. It's incredibly strong when used properly. It eventually has to be replaced and should be maintained if it starts to wear, obviously.

If the raft flips over, you're looking at a potential drowning regardless of the method of strapping people in. If it flips, there's a decent chance they'll be knocked unconscious due to the force from their heads hitting the slide. Velcro wouldn't help there.

This slide was a pretty awful idea to begin with. There is a reason that when a roller coaster has a huge drop then a hump in it is secured to a rail. This thing is just a raft...in a tube. How did they not expect it to jump off the slide eventually? Then they add framing and netting? Yeesh this is a terrible situation.

Right, which is why you would never catch me on an amusement park ride that travels at high speeds that uses Velcro to strap me in.

How fricked up was the guy whose leg decapitated the kid at Six Flags?

Upon further review, I've gotten two separate, but similar, fatal incidents on the same ride mixed together.

Both happened at the Batman Forever ride at Six Flags over Georgia, where passengers legs dangle. The first incident a worker was fatally struck in the head by a riders dangling leg, but he was not decapitated. The second incident a teenage boy in a restricted area was struck by the ride (not the legs of riders) and he was decapitated.

quote:

On May 26, 2002, 58-year-old park employee working in the roller coaster's restricted area at Six Flags Over Georgia was killed after being struck in the head by the dangling leg of a 14-year-old girl riding in the front. The girl was hospitalized with a leg injury

quote:

On June 28, 2008, a 17-year-old South Carolina teenager was decapitated after being struck by the Batman roller coaster at Six Flags Over Georgia. The teen, who was on a trip to the park with his church's youth group, scaled two fences with a friend into a restricted area and walked into the ride's path. Although witnesses stated he was trying to retrieve his hat, a Cobb County police spokesman reported the teens were attempting to take a shortcut into the park

yea, the chain isn't done. The slide probably done for good. This park being shitty might be scuttled. However, blue bayou/ dixielanding had someone die at it a few years ago and they didn't get shut down.

But Velcro would make it much easier for the lifeguard to rescue the unconscious rider who flipped over & hit his head. A jammed or malfunctioning buckle would prevent this.

I don't think there is a big deep pool of water at the end of that slide.

I wonder how the heavy chlorine found in those parks effects the velcro.

We used to jump off the top of the Sonic Chute at Waterland in Houma, and not make contact with the slide until damn near the bottom. Don't know how we all lived

I was so glad when they went to the mats instead of them heavy arse yellow plastic ones. Also, bottom of the sonic site was where I saw my first pair of real titties IRL other than my moms.

Looks like there are 2 body tarps at the bottom of the slide lending credence to the possibility of dismemberment.
Also lots of blood at the top part of the slide as well.
Terrible terrible situation.

where are you seeing these photos?

eta nevermind, just clicked it.

thats horrible..from the amount of blood, dismemberment is a strong theory.

My sources who work at Schlitterbahn are telling me that the boy flew in the air & hit a pipe & his head came off. I can't prove it yet!

Sweet Jesus.....

Riding the last 100 yards of that ride and the slow down to a stop with your headless fricking child!!!!

Lawsuits or settlements and major reform and redesign soon to follow.

The speed and WEIGHT of that ride and only with a lap belt? I'm guessing. Gonna be some NASCAR type harness now.

When I saw the amount of blood in the bottom pool I assumed decapitation or catastrophic neck injury. That is about total blood volume in that collection pool. Also the pic of the covering screen. The mechanism is exactly the same as the kid in Texas (I think) who jumped fences to get his hat and was decapitated by a hanging roller coaster.

These rides are getting ramped up too much.

Blue bikini 40 secs

This girl lives but she falls over and head hits the side. She is KTFO"d. Had the resort not been on their game and sent another tube down it would have been a total disaster. Look at how tame that ride is too. And it was sufficient to drop that poor girl. NOTHING tame looking about that slide.

Was not decapitated it appears, unless they are simply not going to say that to the public.
