Same here, except he feels like he has to dress EXTREMELY preppy so that he isn't discriminated against.
I always tell him "Oh dressing well gets you better treatment, who would have thunk it?"

My friend does this too, I've never talked to him about it, but maybe that's why he dresses nice. He's also a computer programmer, so maybe that's just his style
