i heard the popeyes was expecting record sales...and convenience stores stocked up on orange and grape drinks.

I love fired chicken BTW so I don't get that stereotype

Sound Off for April 19: More on Black Spring Break

Reader opinions from the same newspaper.

quote:

Couldn’t help but laugh when I read the story about the spring breakers not feeling welcomed and worried about too much police presence. One saying the city was acting like the apocalypse and people were going to tear up the city. Wow. Has anyone reminded them that they did, in fact, tear up the city and homeowners’ property last year? I’m totally floored. I’m sure this won’t get printed. We aren’t allowed to dare say an unkind word.

quote:

Black Spring Breakers may have felt unwelcome as the article says, but I guarantee it won’t keep them from coming back any more than the flag or Lil Boosie’s boycott kept them from coming this year.

I think this particular complaint about SB is a case of black people not being able to determine when they are being discriminated against vs when you have to deal with BS that everyone deals with.

To these spring breakers in Biloxi, it seems like the police abd business owners are discriminating them based on their race while reality is that they are being discriminated against fir being drunk spring breakers.

The same amount of police presence and resistance from business owners and hotels/condos occurs at white spring break locations but the AA’s in Biloxi have never been to white SB so they believe all the “extra measures” are because they are black. In reality, it’s cuz they are a large group of drunk people in their 20’s.

Drunk 20 something year olds make shitty decisions regardless of race and the locals don’t want you there.

I’m sure there are certain measures that are specific to Black Spring Break but there are also certain measures specific to white spring break. For example, I know that gulf shores writes as many tickets as possible over the tiniest shite because they know the spoiled white fratstars will have their dads pay for it.

Tybee Island banned alcohol for the week. Last year the spring breakers were shooting each other so they're trying to mitigate that. Doubt it works though.

That's probably the biggest difference. One group says society at large needs to change and one group says I need to change to fit society. Unfortunately, we're at a point where people telling a group that they need to adapt to society to be successful is considered an egregious offense punishable by financial ruin.

Attending spring break with people of other races and cultures might make their spring break experience a lot better.

And do you really expect to be treated the same way as someone like Gravy or an ill mannered thug?

no, but like I said we carry ourselves differently. It is about how you want to be perceived

Of course you carry yourselves differently. Gravy needs the assistance of an excavator to be carried anywhere

this is how america works...not saying it isn't tougher for black men but there are plenty of unsuccessful white guys also
Through growth I've learned a thing or two. One is this, as hard as it is to make it in America, it is at the same time really easy. You just have to carve your path. Smart decisions go a very long way. There are a few hurdles here and there, but that's a part of the race. The thing about capitalism that's so funny is that it is just like any other eco system, the strong survive and rule. Too many people are weak mentally and politicians prey on that.

When people realize their lives are an individual thing (not some identity group) and they'll get what they put in, they'll be successful. Success is relative though.

How can a group of people that are organizing a “black spring break” accuse others of being racist?

Exactly. You shouldn't expect to benefit or fail just because of your race. You should go out guns blazing to secure your legacy.

Not gonna lie, if I worked at Shaggy’s, the last place on earth I would be on the blackest weekend of the year would be at work. That sounds like an absolute nightmare of a weekend.

They aren't excluding non-blacks. They just are marketing it to blacks

this is where double standards come into play in this country...white people could promote the same thing and there would be outrage. Until this stops there will always be issues
