Are you serious?! This cat Salmon has been arguing this local issue all day from Alaska??!! Wow!

anyone want to set the over/under on how long before residents property begins to get vandalized by these "cyclist"?
The day after the bike lanes get removed. A lot of cyclists are good people who probably recognize that the lack of a bike lane on that street isn't a big deal for them...but unfortunately most are petty jerks that think they are above the law.

removing the dedicated bike lane, which is what making the lane a shoulder would be, would set a bad precedent throughout the city
Then they should have thought about that before a group of them started confronting residents, attaching print outs to windshields, and calling the police.
It's too late. The cat's out of the bag and neighborhoods are already going to rethink allowing bike lanes on their residential streets. No one needs a bunch of entitled jerks freaking out over every misplaced garbage can or delivery vehicle on their street.

That isn't the kind of people most neighborhoods want to encourage on their street.

No it is not. Sadly, a few bad apples in the militant biker community have given a bad name to the bikers that can actually steer their bikes around a parked car.
I talked to several bikers that actually have jobs and own property and they agree with the above statement. Oh, and can we talk about the physician that got up and insinuated that an alternative to parking on the street was for the residents to park at the River Center and shuttle in via the trolley? How he got through med school is a wonder.

That was on the Capital Heights neighborhood board. They wanted to film him running the stop sign so the police would do something about it.

Were those also the hipsters that were using sidewalk chalk to warn people not to park in bike lanes? what a bunch of pussies.

They wanted to film him, get his plate number, call the cops, and continue to stalk him.
This was after he was ticketed for running the stop sign and causing the accident. One person suggested "putting the heat on him".

This was posted a few minutes ago on the Nextdoor discussion and really sums it all up.
quote:
Last night, I took a ride down Capital Heights from jefferson to Glenmore, then up Glenmore and back to Claycut. What i observed is that not one car was in the bike lane anywhere on Capital Heights or Glenmore. I also observed that there were almost no trash/recycle bins in the bike lane on either street. three households had locations available off the bike lane, but they chose to encroach.
My experience with Glenmore is that residents generally don't park in the bike lane, and that bikers generally have no problem riding in the bike lane. Also, residents all along the bike lane occasionally block the lane in front of their houses. If i am delivering furniture in my front door, i block it for a few minutes. if i'm working in the flower bed at the corner of glenmore and capital heights, i may block the bike lane, or a glenmore traffic lane for a few minutes. when a moving van delivers furniture anywhere in the area, lanes are blocked while they unload.
To say that you didn't know it is illegal to park in a bike path is less that forthcoming. to demand that no one can ever park in a bike path for any reason is ridiculous. Both sides have good arguments and both sides have absurdly extreme goals.
What changed after blissfully coexisting for 8 years with a less than perfect situation? I personally think it was the contractors who blocked the bike lanes daily for what seems like months on end. It appears that this problem was solved, and the remaining imperfections are workable.
If we can stop talking, stop pointing fingers, stop saying hooray for our side, and simply bee nice to one another, everyone can go home, claim victory among yourselves and live to fight another day if a battle worthy of the fight were to appear - this one is not.
dude nailed it.

The ultimate troll job by the city would be to remove the bike lanes and put up no parking signs on Glenmore if neither side can come to a conclusion.

Screw them. Most cyclists habitually run stop signs, so taking things way too far to stalk and confront a motorist that does the same is kind of rich.

These are the jerks that will ruin this for the rest of us. I think more cyclists fall into that category than don't unfortunately.

Clearly we are dealing with reasonable people here. They want residents to park at the River center so they don't have to share a lane with a car or steer around a delivery truck.

I think it's funny that there are always people in these threads that think "cyclists" or "bikers" don't own cars. I mean, who are these people?

Like the Glenmore residents parking illegally and crying for getting tickets?

What do you mean ACTUALLY have jobs?
Most of them have jobs that probably pay a hell of a lot more than yours. It ain't a cheap hobby.
