My grandfather called the Philadelphia shipyard the shithole of the east coast. This is years before the great one popularized the term “shithole” with respect to third world dictatorship countries.

I was born and raised in Philly. The problem with Philly is that no matter where you are there’s always people up to no good. You could just be minding your own business shooting some hoops on the playground and you’re liable to get into a fight with some idiots causing trouble. That happened to me and my mom sent me to live with my aunt and uncle in California.

So I’d say Boston is probably better.

I’ve never been to Philly. Boston was really cool when I’ve visited

Thanks guys. Was looking for a side trip from NYC and the travel board was too slow. Boston for 4 days it is.

Now next question is East Boston near the maverick train station a bad area?

Both have (D) mayors so the real question is "Which is worse, Philly or Boston?"

Edit: Up voted myself because I'm r(I)ght.

Maverick used to be mostly Hispanic but reasonably safe but my experience with the area is 10 years old, a lot can change in 10 years good or bad. It is a quick run through the Sumner tunnel to the historic district.

I suggest you avoid anything south inside the V made by I-93 and state 9.

It looks a little sketchy but it’s completely safe. Eddie C’s in the square is an all time shitty dive bar if you want to grab a beer with some true degenerates

If Boston is a 7 Philly is a 2. That’s a fairly recent change, btw. Philly was still cool like 10 to 15 years ago. It’s ruined now.

I lived in both cities and currently live in Philly. The Philly food scene is much much better. Like not even close. With that said, Boston is a much much better city and it’s entirely BC of the people. The people in Philly are miserable selfish assholes. It’s truly one giant it’s always sunny episode. The drug problem is an epidemic here. So many homeless druggies.

The stretch from Philly, up through Jersey and into NYC is stuffed full of miserable selfish assholes. It's amazing, the locals have such a high opinion of themselves but are trash in reality.

I lived a long time in Boston too and don’t like it. Population density is horrid. Rent is $2500 for 500 sq ft apartment and cost of living is horrid. Parking is absolutely non existent. Multiple times a week I had to spend 20-30 minutes looking for a parking spot and have to park up to a half mile away from my apt or spend $500/month for garage. Traffic is bad. There aren’t really many great places to eat. My specific neighborhood is 35,000 ppl/sq mile. Southern cities are 2,500 ppl/sq mile. Many taxes too that I never got before. Great job opportunities and great education. Other than that, it’s a no go for me.

You really don’t appreciate how open spacious a city is in the South with ample parking until you’ve been in NY or Boston. It really, really sucks

Philly gets a bad rap but it’s actually a great city. Sure the shithole parts get the most attention but it has plenty of great neighborhoods. Chestnut Hill, University City, West Philly, Washington Square West, I could go on and on.

I agree - just got back from Philly and I think the shitholiness adjective used so liberally in this thread is overstated, there were some great neighborhoods and I didn't find the people rude at all. Still I've been to Boston too and I'd take Boston. I could not get enough of the North End.
