I agree about Luminox, except the lume (glow) starts to fade...after about 20 years...

I have a 3000 series that died. Took it to a watch guy, opened the back, full of crud that had leaked in. He tapped the watch on the counter to clear out most of the crud, put in a new battery and gaskets.

That was 3 years ago. Still running.

Luminox

Check out some of these. Very sturdy and look good IMO. I've had one for about a year (it was around $700) and love it.

had one and loved it, but it actually broke off in the surf in Destin. I was ticked that a watch "made for Navy Seals" broke off in the surf....

I wrote Luminox a letter and they offered me 15% off my next watch. I didn't buy anther one.

It has quartz movement. I feel like this battery has to be the issue. It runs, but doesn’t keep time. It will intermittently stop altogether. They wanted to ship it off for $75, plus the cost of repair.

First, does that movement have a battery end-of-life indicator? On a quartz watch when the battery is low it will move two seconds at a time instead of one. So every two seconds it will move twice quickly. If you have noticed this before replacing the battery (it usually lasts a couple of weeks) have you seen it do that since the battery was replaced? Many quartz movements have them and a lot of dive watches do since it is a ISO requirement for a "true" dive watch.

What did the jeweler actually do? Was it "just" a battery change?

I would not pay anyone to send it to Luminox if you do that I would go directly to them. That said I would probably get a independent to look at it. Manufacturers tend to be on the high side price wise AND more importantly they often don't keep parts for older watches and just say they don't service them. The movement in that watch is likely a ETA or Ronda and can likely be sourced for $20-$40. If it is a movement issue someone with basic watchmaking skills can swap it out in 45 mins or less.* This is what I would do if I didn't feel comfortable playing with it: Take it to Watch Repair Inc on Florida go in and explain the whole deal to them. They SHOULD be able to handle anything up to an including a movement replacement.

* open the back, remove the cell, remove the stem, remove the movement holder, take out the movement with the hands and dial attached, move the hands and dial to the new movement and reassemble.

Tritium half-life is 12.3 years so given the time from production of the tubes until you received the watch you are probably in the 25% photon emission range.

The good thing about tritium tubes is they don't have to be charged and the glow is consistent except over long periods as the tritium decays. Photoluminescent powders like Super-Luminova which are used on most watches now never decay but they have to be charged with light and can be faint by morning depending on the type, color and surface area they are applied to. Some love tritium, some dislike it I personally am ambivalent it is just another part of maintenance if you keep a watch long term and still want the glow, not dissimilar from the radium days.

That’s under $500?

If so, Mark Cuban “take a note gif”.

Citizen Eco Drive

No battery to change, no winding. Charge it up in the light, and it's good for months. Under $300. Will work with multiple kinds of straps.

I work a physical job and my $19 watch from Walmart has taken a beating but is still tickin'. 5 year old Casio, absolutely no bells or whistles to it whatsoever but it's solid.

Seiko 5 is a Seiko subbrand or line which currently is the lowest cost/quality line of Seiko. They have been around for about 50 years and the 5 stands for the 5 attributes they all share (automatic winding, day/date display, protected crown, water-resistance, and a tough case and bracelet). They retail in the $200 to $500 range but unless a style/colorway is hot at the time you can usually get them for 45-60% off MSRP from sites like Jomashop. They are generally excellent value for money watches.

The newest models are slightly more upscale but you can still find a lot of the older models for sell like the venerable SNK80X field watches that are around $90 now but a couple of years ago they were about $70. The newer ones usually have the updated 4R36 movements. The only real negative is they generally have Hardlex crystals (Seiko's name for mineral glass) so they aren't as scratch-resistant as sapphire but theoretically they are less likely to shatter. The other negative is most don't have screw-down crowns. All in all excellent for the money.

I kinda like the limited SRPH19 that marries a Pepsi SKX bezel with a Pouge colored dial. It was an online exclusive from the Seiko and I don't think that have any more and since it was Seiko direct it was full price at $495. Seiko have been moving upmarket with all their lines and doing a lot of limited releases.

Honestly I've been in the "Who wears a watch anymore" camp until recently.

I got to looking at Luminox watches and really liked them (Glad to read the good reviews of them here) but wasn't sure about dropping 300-500 on a watch for the first time out in many many years. I'm tough on watches in the past, banging by arms and hands on everything.

I decided to do a trial run on wearing a watch again and bought a Timex Expedition This one to be exact
It's a pretty nice watch for the price. Been having it for a few weeks now and zero complaints.

Still looking at the Luminox watches, This one I think but I'm in no rush as this Timex is doing the job nicely for now.

It might be a Casio F91W probably the cheapest watch you can buy that will get a ISWYDT nod from a watch idiot savant (WIS). They also have a big following in the hipster and terrorist bombmaker communities.

I bought a Timex Ironman in the PX at boot camp when I was a wee private.
That one watch lasted years.
I bought a new one only because they changed the design a little.
I love gshock as well. My only knock on the gshock is it sits high off the wrist

Picked up a Timex Humvee while in AIT, still have it and it's still running on the original battery 20+ years later. Missing the straps and one of the long screws that attaches to the case, if I could only find the hardware or a donor watch I'd like to wear it again.

Increase in timing means the amplitude of the balance wheel is lower than it should be. This can be for a number of reasons by an abrupt large change is often due to the hairspring being magnetized and sticking to itself and not letting the balance wheel rotate as far as it should. You can pick up a basic "blue" coil watch degausser from Amazon for about $14 which is basically as cheap as having it done. PLenty of YT videos as to how to do this. It could be other issues but that is where I would start again if it was a large abrupt change.
