For me, I don't personally hate Baton Rouge. It's a fine place for my husband and I to live. We live in a good neighborhood (IMO), make enough money to afford our hobbies and travel, and can easily find stuff to do to keep entertained. I do know, however, this is not the place I want to live when we have a child that is school aged. Obviously, I can't send my child to public school in Baton Rouge and I am not moving to the suburbs, that's a 100% no. I also don't want to go the private school route. I have a hard time paying $10,000+ per year for tuition at a religious based school, when I'm not even religious. I realize there are a few other options, but overall Baton Rouge just doesn't seem like a great place to raise a child.

Inner city schools are crap in most cities in the South. I wouldn't send my kids to a public school in Houston either.

I really have no desire to live out in Prairieville or Denham, etc and commute into Baton Rouge. Its just not something I'm interested in. I've always been big on living near work. If I worked in one of those places, I'd be more willing to live there.

Not 100% sure yet, a good start would be a looking into a smaller city not located in the South.
Again, I don't hate Baton Rouge, everywhere has its pros and cons.

several reasons including the religious aspect of it and the network of people you're connected with when you graduate.

Not as simple as just comparing average home/rental prices, you need to include family income. An average family in CA can "afford" much more costly housing than the average family in AL.

Median credit scores, mortgage debt, and non-mortgage debt make up almost half of the category.
Seriously, look at the methodology. About the only thing truly reflecting cost, as opposed to chosen behavior, is housing affordability (cost / median family income). And that only makes up about 1/8 of the score.

I live in Illinois and I can say I agree with this. Chicago is an absolute world class city, but the politicians are driving the city and state off a cliff to the point where I feel like I have no choice but to start to look at other options.

I've traveled just about everywhere in this country, and have not really found people nicer than you'll get in Wisconsin and Minnesota. The midwest, including places like Indiana and Iowa is incredibly welcoming. Not speaking for anyone, but I'd wager that folks that came up to Lambeau a few years ago would agree with me.
And Chicago is the nicest major city I've ever been in. NYC no one gives a shite about you, L.A. everyone is trying to act like they're better than you.
