I agree. I've been to 46 states and LA isn't near the bottom for me. I've been plenty of places that I wouldn't choose over LA. We rank so low in everything because we have a lot of poor people. If you aren't one of them your life likely isn't too bad.

You can much worse than Louisiana, not sure I agree with that list. I may be biased, but I’m a lot less worried about my kids playing in BR than I would be in LA or some other major city. Cost of living is pretty low, so your family can afford to do more things.
People down here are much nicer than other areas of the country as well. Wouldn’t most parents want to raise their kids in a laid back, close-knit town with a low cost of living, that values manners and politeness?

If we were to move our families to a place like New Hampshire or Massachusetts, we'd probably look back and think to ourselves "damn, the south really is a shithole".
There are nice places all over, but money isn't everything. By and large the people are nicer in the south and they're happier. Those are fairly important things to help raise and KEEP a good family intact.

I'm all for manners and politeness, but I'm willing to sacrifice some of that for better educational opportunities and higher salaries if it means moving to a more fast paced place.

I'm having an issue with some of their criteria and rankings. Seems a bit nebulous.
You're telling me Massachusetts is 40 spots higher than Alabama in affordability? They even equate family income to housing in their calculations.
Just comparing Plymouth, MA to Birmingham, AL, you'd need to double your salary to afford MA. Using Sperling's scale, Birmingham scores a 32.9 for housing and Plymouth scores a 169.2. You'd need to more than double your salary to afford Boston from Birmingham.
Are their wages that much higher? I mean for the common person.
I'm not saying it's not possible to afford to live there, but to say that MA is 8 while Alabama is 41 seems like the scale is shifted towards particular states.
Also, how do they determine "Family Fun" attractions (the highest point total in this section is family attractions)? MA is ranked 6th overall for Family Fun while Alabama is 47th. Alabama is a shitload bigger than MA with more coastline, state parks, and national parks. There are also four cities in the state - each with zoos, science centers, and museums for families to enjoy. I'm not saying MA might not be better, but I'm having a hard time believing they're 41 spots better.
It's also suspect that the six people in charge of this study reside in the Northeast.

Usually with fast-paced, comes less security. Seems like that would be the ultimate goal for a parent, keeping their kids safe.

When I lived there back in 2000 I loved it. We travel to Dallas every year during the holidays and always enjoy our time there. I guess it depends on where your live, but in North Dallas we absolutely adore the city and surrounding areas. So much opportunity for growth professionally in and around the Dallas area.

In short, it appears that the lowest socioeconomic group is tanking the results for the rest of the state because they are abysmal at handling money.
It certainly doesn’t appear to be due to cost of living, home prices, or a number of other reasons which should states near the top in that category like Massachusetts or Rhode Island.
