why can't it be a closed, chilled system

You’d need a massive nuclear power plant

Public officials in Bessemer, including its mayor and city attorney, have confirmed they’ve signed non-disclosure agreements related to the project, limiting the amount of information available to residents about the proposal.

How is this allowed?

This is bullshite

Agreed. Deals involving significant use of public resources should require public information.

There are two data centers being built in LA. Both required NDA’s to local officials to be brought into the discussion. I guess when billions are on the line they slap NDA’s on everyone.

Has anyone done a study on how long these aquifers will be able to keep this up? In a decade we will see the water problems in the SW come to the south east because all this shite.

The three main aquifers in LA are already seeing degrading quality due to being drawn down and over use.

This is reported to be a 700 acre project encompassing 18 buildings, all bigger than the average Walmart. The people involved will also not acknowledge the end user/owner of the data center, it is currently under a company called Logistic Land Investment. All city council members have signed non-disclosure agreements, and there are a whole lot of unanswered questions around this.

I’m confident that Bessemer has the tools and officials to keep this under control.

Sparta or Cockfield aquifer, suck that bitch dry! Wait to the farmers in the area see what the cost of irrigation goes up to.

The amount of water on earth is fixed, no more, no less. It just goes through phases. We will never run out of water. We just need to advance technology on how to purify it. It’s what most municipal water systems do on a daily basis.

It’s a massive amount of water. A cooling system made for that volume of water doesn’t even exist. The world largest in Qutar handlees around 97 million gallons a day

What a coincidence.

Eddington just came out this weekend and spoilers

It’s about a mega corp manipulating local politics to get their data center built despite the public being against it

What about issues with climate change they are so worried about? If these are the same centers Bill Gates is talking of using human waste to remove carbon from the atmosphere from Microsoft’s use of data centers. I don’t understand why more aren’t concerned with these data centers. Doesn’t seem like anything good. Humans are going to be so screwed in the future bc of AI.

WTF would that matter? The community isn't being told what's up, which is a point itself.

We had our CEO in today for closed door townhall. He touched on a recent meeting he had with one of the leading AI creators, the name is escaping me, maybe deep mind but I can't recall for sure.

Paraphrasing - the system is currently smarter than Einstein and Galileo combined. In 5yrs it will not only be exponentially smarter but also have true empathy and connection to people without caring about itself. It will completely be tied to your life and data so it will predict your health, know what you need before you know what you need. Etc.

All while not caring about itself.

I so badly wanted to raise my hand to say how it has been proven they already care about and protect themselves but didn't want to derail the meeting which was a business and financial update.

We are so screwed, SkyNet is already playing us.

Well that’s terrifying. Complete control is the goal. I’m glad my kids are adults now because there is no way I’d want to bring one into the world that we are heading into.

As far as why they can't recycle the water, I wonder why the problem? Because they can't recyle water at the crypto plant either and they dump that shite right back in the White river, which connects right into the Arkansas which is a main tributary for the Mississippi.

When you operate a closed system you still need someway to cool the water. Thus coolings towers…cooling towers then means the water is exposed to the elements so you get evaporation, algae , bus, etc and the water then has to be treated.

All this cost companies big $$$ which is why this isn’t prevalent outside of refineries/chemical plants that take in lots of cash.

This isn’t well water. It’s surface water from the Warrior River. 2 million gallons a day is nothing. 75% of the water is evaporated to cool the chillers. It’s no big deal water wise. A literal drop in the bucket. They just need to expand the plant. It’s a great economic development. People just don’t know..

This is Birmingham, Alabama (Bessmer) we're talking about. You'd be hard pressed to find a more corrupt, devious and scandal ridden operation than Jefferson County.

Also the places they seem to be putting these data centers are in an economic depression and people are desperate for something to happen. This combined with local corruption is something these ai companies are happy to exploit.
