$45k is really the very bottom of the range. A NJ newspaper posted this past year that there are over 1,000 public school teachers making $100k (teachers not administrators) and some making more than $150k.
Depending on the state pay varies.

People on TD, always grossly underestimate the pay of teachers, because most of us being from south LA went to private schools, where the pay is very low.

My wife teaches at one of the better public schools in our area and ever day she talks to me about getting out of it.

I subbed a time or two for extra cash while in college and I can tell you that it’s absolutely terrible. Teaching might be ok if we still lived in the 50s/60s society where kids and parents weren’t complete pieces of shite like today, but you couldn’t pay me enough to be a teacher today.

Parents don’t want a teacher, they want a babysitter. Their kid isn’t behaving or is failing? Well, it’s the teacher’s fault, not precious little innocent Lucy.

Combine that with an administration that will frick you over in a heartbeat, data entry, test scores, piloting, duty assignments, etc

Nobody seems to factor in the time teachers spend doing the things that have to be done. You hear that 8.5 to 9 months a year all the time, but do you hear about the 10-11 hour days they put in during that 9 months?

Do you realize that the mountain of worksheets, study guides, tests, practice tests, and homework your kid comes home with, for the most part has to be graded?

Do you realize that once graded, all that information has to be loaded into the computer so that report cards can be generated? Each paper, each grade, each kid.

Do you realize that during the summer, teachers are required to attend classes and seminars to maintain their credentials? That usually accounts for at least two weeks.

My wife averages 10 to 10.5 hours per day, not including duties like making sure none of them kill each other on the way to the bus twice a week. At 10 hours per day, that's roughly 2000 hours per year. A normal worker doing 8 hours per day puts in 2080 hours in a year. So my wife puts in roughly 96% of the average worker's hours, in 9 months.

I don't think teachers have the right to complain, as they should have known what they were getting into, but people need to try to understand the facts of the matter, and appreciate what they do.

When you factor in having to deal with 20-30 kids for 6 or 7 hours per day, at least for me twice the pay, and twice the time off wouldn't be enough.

100% agree, but then a few years back my wife had a kid that literally shite himself multiple times, sitting in the classroom. I'm not talking kindergarten, she is a 4th grade teacher. Kid shite so much, it came up out of the back of his pants, while sitting in a classroom with 25 other kids. Happened about once a week all year.

She had a kid of divorced parents, where the dad took to watching porn with his 4th grade son. Kid tried to molest every girl he came in contact with.

More abuse and neglect through drugs and just generally being piece of shite parents than I can mention.

I don’t think teaching is a bad gig. The pay is solid and there are a lot of perks. There are also some things that are a pain to deal with. It is what it is. I too have no sympathy for anyone, including you. I have taught for 23 years. When it’s time for me to go in a different direction job wise, I will. I would imagine that you will as well. As for knowing what you signed up for, there is no way to truly know. The government is seemingly designing guidelines on the fly sometimes. Such is life I suppose. You have to adapt or do something different. I like what I do... for now. When the day comes where that is not the case, then I’m out. Peace.

I taught English and coached football for 6 years. The schedule is great, but everything else sucks.
