I have a 2WD Tundra. Love it but I wish I’d gotten the 4WD.

So I bought a Hyundai Santa Cruz. 4 door car with a 4 ft truck bed. Awd, solid towing capacity and looks pretty damn cool to boot.
I like those.

My mechanic told me that if you don't use it regularly its a waste of money. Maintenance, shorter tire life and shitty ride. I passed on it
Did you not ask what "use it regularly" meant?
It's as simple as finding a dirt or gravel road or parking lot, putting it in 4 high, and driving around for a couple of minutes. You're just getting the front diff to engage and coat the gears in oil. That's it.
And shorter life? I just traded in a 2012 Tacoma 4x4 with 237K miles on it and NEVER had a problem with the drive train.

If you live where there is snow and ice, 4wd helps.

You have a mechanic.

I am fully aware the baw sector finds that vehicle to be a clown car. thankfully I am confident in my penis size and i like a good warranty.

Yes better to have it and never use it then to need it and not have it available.
With some of the potholes in Louisiana you might need it

my ex drove mine in 4wd on dry pavement 60 miles once. Thus the reason she's my ex.

Don't have it and haven't needed it in the 9 years I've had my truck. Pulls my boat out of the launch just fine.

Sounds like I found the insecure little man. I don't define my masculinity by what I drive so I'm very comfortable in my used Audi and Accord.
My curiosity about what you drive makes me an insecure little man? I dont follow the logic but ok.
Congrats on your Audi and your tract house on that quarter acre. You sound miserable and I bet your wife and boss both hate you.

Yes.
I rarely use 4x4, but selling a F250 w/o it would be difficult IMO.

Define "need."
I would never own a 2wd truck. I'd rather downgrade and buy a used 4wd than a 2wd new.
I've never had anything with my 4wd components break like you mean. Just change the diff fluid once or twice if you have a solid axle.

Stiffer suspension and rougher ride. No thanks.
Most off road packages come with higher quality suspension than 2wd variants. Every manufacturer has partnered with the aftermarket to upgrade the trucks.

You never need it until you need it

Best impromptu need for a 4-by is when you get up to a traffic jam on the interstate and don’t have an “official” cut through to turn around to the other side…..you mad dog it down into that median and make you own cut through.

It's little dick syndrome. I'm a runner that lives in an upper middle class suburb. I run all throughout my cookie cutter, boring neighborhood every day and almost every driveway has one or more over compensating, obnoxiously large 4x4 trucks with aftermarket EVERYTHING. And they're usually lifted with massive off-road rated tires. Come on, just stop. You all live in a gated subdivision on your .25 acre plot of land with an HOA and a community pool, just like me. You're not hauling hay bales or moving cattle or pouring concrete every day. You're in a cubicle, working on spreadsheets for accounts receiving. I guess they need the $90K oversized truck to convince themselves they're real men despite the fact they may use the bed twice a year to move a larger than normal Costco grocery run.
You have no idea what those people do with their spare time. I have a ranch in South Texas, deer lease in West Texas and hunting property in Beaumont Texas. I use my truck and 4x4 a decent amount and if you saw my house you’d never think so.

I need it to get up my driveway if it's wet and I stop to get the mail. So yes.

On my 3rd 2x4. I went to many years of never using the feature, and on my last one, I had to replace both front axle thingies. I always get the limited slip option and have zero problems on even the slickest boat ramps.
