It's pretty shitty to just stick the lawn guy with the bill. If you are that much of a dumbass to hire some guy off the street to chop down your tree you should be responsible for paying for the damages

I agree to an extent. Should be a 50/50 split imo.

You're absolutely correct. Maybe $5,000. Maybe $7,500. cheap for getting one that tall dropped.

i've got a 110 ton truck crane scheduled to come pick a 75ft loblolly pine out of the backyard next week and it's no where near those prices...

I'm curious if this is covered by insurance if the homeowner does this. Is that considered a reasonable accident?

Homeowners insurance would cover this as it is sudden and/or accidental but you can bet your arse that’s the last claim that particular insurance company is ever paying out to you

This is all it comes down to, I worked for years with tree companies that are contracted with power companies and I can’t begin to count the number of side jobs I did. Prices from a side job are going to be way different compared to a legit company that’s licensed and insured, thankfully I was never on a job that caused damage.

Listen to that “ohhhhhhhh.” Even before he hits the “goddammit,” this amateur tree surgeon is yelling to God from his doomed heels. That is a cry from the soul to this cursed earth: Why have you turned against me, giver of life? Why has that which brought shade and life now become a swift hammer of a cruel justice beyond my understanding? What is that man with the rope supposed to be doing here, exactly?

Their relationship with the lawn guy, already strained by the whole dropping-a-tree-on-your-house thing, fell to pieces. To no one’s surprise, he doesn’t do the Bieniek family’s yard anymore. “He still does some of our neighbor’s yards. I don’t know how the insurance company worked out, but he does have what looks to be a nice new truck.”
