What good is a library going to do if the school systems don't teach our youth how to read in the first place? This 1.7 mill should have been funneled back into education like fixing crumbling middle schools in the inner city.

No, that would be more money squandered. They already spend a couple thousand more per student than ISDs 5 hrs to the west and get terrible results. The ISDs 5 hrs to the west get amazing results.

People want to believe our education problems are because we don't spend enough money, but they are wrong.

yep. but the ISDs are an unfair comparison. the culture "5 hours to the west" is different than the culture in the BR public school system. Thats what certain areas of the city dont want to admit.

Wondering if they will use the same team that built the one downtown to build this one?

I think the issue is here with most, is the over-populating of local libraries. When is enough enough?

I assume you are a registered voter, start a campaign to reduce the millage for public libraries, get it on the ballot, and vote it in. Public libraries are one thing I like my tax dollars going to.

Yep. One of the biggest myths out there. Problem is, they get all this money, how much actually goes to things that actually educate children? And, how much goes to people sitting in offices throughout the system, and how much goes to materials and programs that teachers use?

Carry your bitch arse to the Liberry to rent it or buy it for $25.

The documentary is centered around The Brooks Park Pool Project. Because City Park Pool was so close to the black community but off-limits to black residents, black residents were rightfully pissed off.

The last straw came when some black kids drowned playing in a ditch after a heavy rain(that was common for white kids and black kids to make their way to these swimming holes in the Summer after rains). Leaders in the Black community decided to take matters into their own hands to provide a safe, clean public pool for their community.

They bought some land, raised the money and resources and built the pool.
This was highly controversial b/c they ALREADY paid taxes for the Whites-only City Park Pool to be built and now paying out of pocket to build their own pool. Some black leaders were against this "do it yourself" approach and wanted the City to build their pool.

It's a very interesting perspective that makes you appreciate the pride in the black community back then and yet the struggle for equality and fair opportunities.

Brooks Pool still operates today under BREC. Pretty damned interesting history in your own back yard.

i get your point, but just to be fair: the area we are referring to as "5 hours to the west" being Houston has poor / extremely low income areas as well. that have as high if not higher "minority" populations in those areas.

correct.

Don't most of the inner city Houston schools suck? Most of the posters on here that have kids don't live in the city from what I can tell. They live in the Woodlands, Katy etc.

there are exception areas for sure, but yes, the better schools in Houston are in the suburbs where they created their own ISDs. HISD is a shite show for the most part.

Look up the Cy-Fair ISD and Katy ISD where may of the posters on this site send their children.

The HISD is certainly not as good as the Cy-Fair and other good school ISDs.

Here is a relatively new school they built about a mile from me.

LINK

Cy-Fair is a huge school district yet does really well. Some schools better than others but overall good.

I'm familiar with the area and each ISDs state ranking. My wife has worked for HISD, Klein ISD, and now Conroe ISD.

We live in Cypresswood, I work directly North of 99 from Spring. hint hint.
