I believe it, and have seen it.
Unfortunately they usually sacrifice their personal lives to do it. Not worth it to me, but some people are driven by money only.

Oh for crying out loud, speedy just spelled it out for you.
If they work 4 ten hour days in a week and get some OT on those days and then on the off days, the guy puts in 12-16 hours of OT on those days, OT adds up really really fast.
Averaging has nothing to do with it. The guy isn't working on averages.
He kills it on his off days or uses accrued time to murder down OT.

12-13 hour days with 16's sprinkled in a half dozen times a month. Yes.
Also, I think people don't understand that in some fields it is pretty common. That is why some people burn out.

I sure hope that taking Sick Leave on a day and then working OverTime isn't an option. That alone is fraud. Despite what many people think, Sick Leave isn't "earned time". It is for when you are sick. I never understood my military friends going on Terminal Leave for 6-8 months and burning up all of their sick leave before retiring. That shouldn't be allowed.

Ok so then if sick leave shouldn't be allowed to be accured, you would have people disappearing from work for about 1-2 months per year with vacation, sick, and comp time.
They EARNED the time, who are you to say how a person chooses to use THEIR time?
If they want to wait to burn it at retirement or sell it back then that is their choice

You should not be allowed to use a sick day just so you can hit OT.
Especially as a civil servant.

Thats the thing. If guys are getting too much OT, then its a signal that there should be more hires

Sick time is there for public and workplace health safety, not so you can take a vacation or earn OT.
Gaming that system is still fraud.

Also, taking vacation to work OT isn't allowed but with one exception...LSU football games.
So many officers are needed to work the LSU games that the department isn't able to fill all the spots with off duty officers

Again, SFP probably knows lawyers that hit these level hours. I have seen plenty of engineers at this level. CEO's are notorious for 18hr days.

You do realize that in almost all industries, it's cheaper to pay the OT than to outfit a person in a new job.
And especially for officers, it's way cheaper to pay OT than it is to buy all the equipment for a new person and benefits.
I would imagine by the time you outfit a car wth all the stuff it has, it's easily pushing $50k-$60k and that's just the car for 1 person
