re: Atlanta - what's special about it?

-Major city with all of the amenities that you would expect.
-Low COL with a good economy.
-Underrated restaurant scene.
-The city is at 1000 ft elevation so the climate is much nicer than you would expect compared to other cities in the Southeast.
-Direct flights to anywhere in the world.
-1 hr away from mountains with great hiking and mountain biking.
-Easy drive to the gulf or the Atlantic beaches.
We only lived there for a year and a half but we really enjoyed it and would have been happy to have stayed long term.

Look another dick measuring contest. No place in our world is better than another. I love my small hometown in LA. Someone else loves the medium sized or metropolis. It's all subjective. Just be happy where you are. If you aren't? Move! Hate these threads. Yadda, yadda, yadda

It’s probably the least interesting or fun out of the other large primarily poST WWII cities like Dallas, Houston, Phoenix, Charlotte, Orlando, Miami, Los Angeles, etc.

It's actually quite beautiful there. The huge boom started after the Olympics really. It was growing before, but not at the rate following it.
If I had kids, move there in a heartbeat. LA is a dump compared to metro ATL.

It's not a place to vacation really but not a bad spot to work/live.

My nephew lives in Buford, and a young cousin lives in Buckhead. Both places seem very nice, but I've never been there. Athens is pretty cool, though. Went there several times to the Navy Supply Corps School before they moved it to Newport, RI (another really nice place).

I went to Charlotte for a weekend recently and enjoyed it. The times i have been to Atlanta, I haven't really enjoyed it. But, this thread makes sense, Atlanta does seem like a great place to live, but not necessarily to visit.

Atlanta strted growing because of its airport mainly. When air travel became a big thing after WWII, Atlanta was geographically positioned in an advantageous position. It was the most serviceable airport at the Southern end of the Eastern Seaboard which made it optimal to fly to the center of the country to places in Texas and the Mississippi Valley. It also had a lot of usable land around the city. It also had become a rail center for very much the same reason as it became an airhub....geography
