I agree, and as we get more evidence from other countries I don't think it's that they know more than they are telling us.

I think it's 100% about avoiding taking the blame for some hospitals being overrun.

At some point, a large portion of our citizens and most of our politicians absorbed the idea that the government is responsible for our health, and this is one of the results.

It should last until November...

Until the next "scary" disease from some foreign country occurs. Which WILL happen. Likely in 2-4 years. If this response "worked" (relative to what you feel was important), then why would everyone not want to do it again...immediately? That will be the push. It worked with coronavirus, so let's do it again...society and economic consequences be damned!!

This will be the narrative of the MSM not matter the outcome. This "panic" is just the new normal.

everything is about this issue. it's the primary issue

which is why fearmongering and increasing panic should be the secondary issue

the problem is government is more likely to restrict your average citizens, which is going to lead to more panic and disinformation

White collar work = / = most people

Nor is white collar work invulnerable from slowdowns

Who's to say you're going to save that many people? It's all just conjecture that doesn't seem supported by what we've seen in other countries further into it.

You don't cripple the economy based on conjecture.

And 15+% unemployment including a ton of white collar workers isn't an inconvenience. It's an unmitigated disaster.

the UK's plan. i like the theory. curious how it works out

they're putting the 15% (or so) of the population who are at risk in quarantine to allow 85% of society to function

we're putting 85% of the population in quarantine to decrease the chance the 15% get infected

Well said. I guarantee you our citizens are gonna come unglued after 2 weeks of this shite.

I agree with this. The panic over this thing could be worse than the virus when you consider the economy tanking and wiping out tons of small businesses.

Either the cdc knows more than they are telling us, because they don’t want people to panic, or they’re being irresponsible by overstating this and causing unnecessary harm. Not sure which it is.

1. No one should be panicking, there is no reason to panic.

2. As a small business man I feel for the guys impacted, I am in a business that is exploding, but I am the exception. If I would have had two months of interrupted revenue I would have been in a terrible position.

3. The CDC is flying blind and trying to play both sides, they need to take. a stance or not. That said, the CDC is also treating the unknown and offering information to the most fragile set of citizens ever seen in human kind. Americans are just insane with emotion.

Wrecking commerce is FAR more than merely an inconvenience. We've already seen the impact on the stock market. But more than that, this reaction could and likely will (hopefully to a lesser degree than possible) cripple small businesses.

There are far, FAR, more people out there who are taking losses in revenue, being furlough, and are at significant risk of losing their jobs because of this

Another incentive to flatten the curve and social distance is to buy time, hoping for a vaccine or something to be developed that can be deployed to help. Also for hopefully building/producing more medical equipment like more ventilators.

Ruining the economy to "flatten the curve" for a virus that is basically the flu is going to go down as one of the dumbest ideas in history.

Yep.

So the treatment is the same as the flu as and the death rates will most likely even out to be like the flu once we start seeing the recoveries increase, but were supposed to treat it like the black death?! frick you idiots that think shutting down businesses and killing an economy over this. The media and our government, from the president to the dog catcher, has done very little to stop the panic. This whole reaction sets a very bad precedent for the future.

Another reason to flatten the curve: the other coroniviruses that infect humans are seasonal, basically diseases of winter. This may abate with hotter weather, so we should minimize spread now.

Decent article on possible outcomes

I would prefer we focus on straightening the curves while flattening the hills. Someday, the mountain might get us. But the law never will.
