That’s not what I meant at all. Why would she shoot herself after asking her daughter to stay with her (presumably happy that she was there), and with a friend coming to visit? And as someone already pointed out, why would her family keep a weapon in close proximity knowing her state of mind?

I see. Well, she was mentally ill, so you can't make sense of anything that usually happens with people who are that depressed. And yes, I wouldn't want a gun close to anyone with bad depression, but her mom was still independent and high functioning (just mentally ill), so she could have easily bought a gun herself and not told anyone. Who knows though?
