Never been there but i can’t imagine how insanely liberal that school has got to be

anyone here have experience with this type of thing?
I was accepted at ASFA and JCIB, and I toured both.
ASFA was a little nerdy and artsy for me. This was almost 30 years ago and you had chicks with half their heads shaved and the other half bright blue, guys with painted fingernails, etc.
I ended up choosing to staying put, mostly based on sports. Don’t regret it. Did just fine at a normal public school taking all AP/honors/dual enrollment.
If I had to choose between the two, I much preferred JC IB to ASFA.
But if your son is more creative, he might love it. He could always try it out for a semester.
FWIW though, I wouldn’t send my kids to ASFA. I’d be fine with them going to JCIB (unless things have changed significantly).

I don't think I'd want my son living in downtown Birmingham but maybe that's just me.

Fine arts is too small of a niche to specialize this early, at the expense of physics/calculus type of HS classes. If it were a STEM based education, my opinion might change, based on the amount of jobs available for engineers, programmers, scientists, etc. Writing/acting/singing is a lot like professional sports, but even more of a crap shoot honestly.
How is going to a magnet high school for arts different than if you go to a ‘specialized’ high school for sports, like IMG Academy in Bradenton, or even John Curtis, and then once you get to college you get ‘serious’ about figuring out a career.. or you become actually good enough to beat the odds…. IMO high school is for doing the things you love, whether that’s sports or arts or whatever, before the real world sets in and you have to do what you have to do .

want him at “normal school” but also don’t want him resenting me for forcing a choice on him that could shape his future…
Then sit down with him, write out all the pros and cons, and let him think about it and decide. If he goes and hates it, bring him back. If he decides to stay, the decision is his and he will appreciate your support.

Irondale is so far out of the way typically... Fultondale isn't going to be much better. Luckily if my children get into IB we live North of town. Another issue he could be facing is that his son is in Hoover city schools - which isn't a part of Jefferson County School system

It’s Alabama high school bro. Is this really what’s going to get him an Academy award?

I' worried about the atmosphere being too leftist for my taste, and I a not excited about school going till 4.30 in downtown Bham...

14; exiting 8th grade
his friend that applied did not get accepted; her mom was WAY more excited about it that I am
I KNEW he would get accepted (because I am not excited about him going)

You need to support her dreams and make sure she knows you still love her no matter her choice.

The minister of music at a local church attended ASFA. He said it prepared him well for the college of his choice.

Congratulations to your son.
There's little point in fighting it. Either he goes to ASFA and joins the rainbow people, or you forbid him from doing so and he sucks twice the dicks out of rebellion.
So do you think he will be a G or a T?

This…. I hate to break it to the OP baw, but his son is gonna be who he’s gonna be, regardless of whichever school he attends… You need to love your kids no matter what, life’s too short not to .

Two people I went to school with went to ASFA. The dude is an Russian Orthodox minister and the girl is an optometrist.
That’s all I got. Both seem pretty normal.
