A large proportion of the student population there is gay. Seriously.

Did you mention where your son is at currently?

Like mentioned earlier, ASFA is a niche school mostly but they do have a STEM program. When I was school aged, it was dorm living and all school (10+hrs a day). I made 28 on ACT and wasnt even sniffed, but a few other friends were. One went on to full ride at Auburn and a Pharmicist. The other went to Harvard and an Opera singer, which you can imagine made it difficult for him to pay the bills and forced him to get a grown up job.

Overall ASFA is one of if not the, best Alabama HS to have on a college application. It is a MAJOR achievement to be accepted. However, there are other programs in the Birmingham area. I would use the ASFA acceptance and leverage contacts to see what else is out there.

Keep him in normal school. Singing and dancing is a hobby, not a career.

Irondale is so far out of the way typically... Fultondale isn't going to be much better. Luckily if my children get into IB we live North of town. Another issue he could be facing is that his son is in Hoover city schools - which isn't a part of Jefferson County School system

Jeffco opens JCIB to county residents regardless of school district. Out of county can be accepted, but there is a fee.

If your boy got into ASFA that means he probably has a strong affinity for Fine Arts already and this would be a big deal for him.

I don’t want to stifle him, or destroy his dreams, but I’m inclined to keep him at regular school

anyone here have experience with this type of thing?

I know 3 people who attended asfa and 2 of the 3 left junior year and the other graduated but never pursued art as a career. All 3 got super burnt out and no longer enjoyed the medium they specialized in.

This

My niece is currently at UNCSA in Winston Salem. She’s in hs there and she’s an absolutely amazing dancer. Truly an athlete and works her arse off, dancing 5-6 hours a day. She went into that school beautiful and as sweet a person as you could possibly know. After 3 years there it’s all gender pronouns, virtue signaling and the weirdest group of friends you can imagine. Utterly ridiculous, woke politics and legit believes that the most pressing issues on the planet right now relate to oppression of the alphabet people. She has a bf who goes there who’s in for acting and he’s an effeminate oddball. I’ve been to a couple of her performances and they’re super talented but man.. the transformation and indoctrination of this beautiful, innocent and talented person that I’ve witnessed over 3 years is shocking. She’s now applying to colleges like this all over the NE so this shite will just continue. Sad.

My thought too. I mean, if your son is into theater, he’s either going to be a tough renaissance man who can do all that and not fall victim to the indoctrination, or he was likely heading toward those stances and interests anyway.

I do think there are kids who get trapped in something they’re good at and just keep going, without much thought for the stuff they may be setting aside to do it. If that could be him and dad can be honest and objective about it, pulling him out to do normal HS stuff could change his life.

Calm down, justice. It’s early in the day to be this worked up over anonymous posters on the internet.

My sister got accepted into one of those types of elite boarding schools (MSMS in Columbus) and it helped her get into Stanford where she pursued a medical career in being a neurosurgeon. She is a normal person who dates men, hunts and fishes and voted Trump so I wouldn’t worry about the school environment changing him in any way unless he is a weak minded person who follows the crowd rather than be an individual.

If he has the brain to get accepted and really wants to go, let him. Normal school likely isn’t a challenge and if he isn’t interested in sports and wants to focus on his future using his talents then you should support him.

ASFA was a little nerdy and artsy for me. This was almost 30 years ago and you had chicks with half their heads shaved and the other half bright blue, guys with painted fingernails, etc.

Art schools do have really weird people for sure

That's awesome. You should take him to a couple of concerts where they have badass light show and nudge him towards that line of work. I think MTSU has a program for it. I know they have a sound engineer program too. Grats... Tons of work for people with artistic talents in cool cities across the country.
