I was always told it was to give low skill people jobs back in the day.
As automobile ownership grew and became more common, states adopted laws around 1950 requiring gasoline pumped into cars by service station attendants only, for safety reasons. Most states repealed this law, but voters in New Jersey and Oregon did not. One main reason would be the elimination of jobs, but there were also concerns for public safety, they liked the convenience, didn't want to learn to pump gas after a lifetime of never having to. And some people just like unique quirks about their state and don't want to change them (for example, Louisiana has parishes instead of counties).

I have one right near my house. (Has both full service and self service pumps)
With gas sitting around 2.20 or so, without realizing it I pulled up to the full service station, pumped my gas and was like wtf when I saw the final bill. It was like $3.20 at the full service line. Didn't look at gas price at the pump bc I had looked at the billboard out front. Oh well. Last time I used that one.
Guess it's nice for some to have the option, but a law to prevent people from being able to pump their own gas? Wow.

I've done a couple road trips through Oregon and the rest of the pacific NW. First time I got in trouble for trying to pump my own gas because I didn't know better lol. I kinda thought it was interesting but I'd rather pump my own.
Portland has the best donut place in the country - Voodoo Donuts, totally awesome. And Dutch Bros Coffee was to die for. Spent the rest of the time along the coast which was just beautiful especially Cannon Beach. Didn't appear very hillbilly in that region, actually pretty affluent but of course there are a lot of tourists there too and probably different than the inland part of Oregon.

The worst thing(and Shell does this a lot) is you see a billboard price that's decent. Maybe a penny or two more than Exxon but you don't have to cross the street.

I get your sentiment but
1) I would have a hard time paying $1/gal more for gas just so I can sit in my car while someone performs this beyond simple task. I don’t drive that much but between our 2 cars we probably burn thru 50 gal of gas/month so that $600/yr. It would be in the thousands for those who have substantial commutes
2)For La to change from Parish to County really makes no difference. It’s just a name so it fits well as something that’s cool bc it’s different
