PHOENIX (AZFamily) — Arizona State University is now offering a content creation major, designed to teach students how to build an audience, market themselves and grow a career as an influencer.
The program is housed at ASU’s Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication.
What students will learn
Jessica Pucci, senior associate dean at the Cronkite School, said the major goes beyond simply making videos.
“I don’t know any content creator who wouldn’t benefit from having world-class faculty whose sole mission is to help you and support your growth as a creator,” Pucci said.
Students in the program will learn how to measure content performance across multiple platforms and develop strategies to improve and test their content, Pucci said.
The program’s final project requires students to select a social media platform of their choice — such as TikTok — then develop a growth strategy, create content and gain followers throughout the semester.
“They will have demonstrable audience growth. They will have a platform of their choice with real content and real followers and a real audience behind them,” Pucci said.
Voices from the field and campus
ASU student Caroline Rowland said the skills taught in the program are essential.
“It is absolutely incredibly important to learn how to use social media and brand yourself,” Rowland said.
Anna Elizabeth, an Arizona-based influencer who works as a medical assistant while creating content, said the program would have helped her when she was starting out.
“There’s editing, there’s marketing strategies of it. There’s like, ‘How do I get PR? How do I get brands to notice me?’” Elizabeth said. “It’s a little bit difficult to understand that portion if you haven’t done it for a long time.”
Elizabeth said she believes the major would have made a difference for her.
“I feel like if I had that opportunity in this time that I started doing content, I feel like it would have benefited me a whole lot,” she said.
The content creation degree program also includes traditional general education requirements, including math, history and writing

I can’t think of a more Arizona State degree than that

Not really a bad idea

I wish something like that existed 10 years ago when I was first starting to play original music and was trying to learn how to market myself online. A lot of that knowledge is super useful for any business.

That's actually a practical pursuit in this day and age.
Whether you like it or not, there's a huge contingent of young people pursuing this stuff and there's money in it.
Certainly a better use of time than art history, medieval history or whatever liberal arts degrees many pursue that have zero ROI.

I only think it's not a bad idea if there are stringent requirements on the content. Like you have to create a small business idea and this course helps you grow the brand...that woudl be cool. Basically a new and improved version of a marketing degree. Just lip synching to a song clip while doing a retarded dance in your underwear and having that be your final exam is stupid. These 18 year olds can do 30 minutes of internet research and figure out how to reach a higher audience and attract more viewers.

Bunch of wackos on staff there.
Similar to most colleges and universities.

You can now name a lot of majors on this criteria these days. ChatGPT can get you a lot of 4 year degrees does instantly

All an "influencer" needs is a cell phone camera and yoga pants. Women have it so easy.

There's a reason ASU has no respect in academia. It's strictly a party school. This is definitely on par with that. They might actually get a good return out of this, especially when students are surveyed 6 months after graduation and how much they're earning.
But more than likely, it'll be a complete and utter flop.
I am surprised they don't have Gen AI degrees yet -- that would be more useful in today's world.

That place has more degree options than most places. They do a lot of tech things there that are actually very highly ranked

I was just saying yesterday how annoying it is to see every female with Influencer on their Facebook account. The whole influencer BS is such a turnoff.

Those are a dime a dozen. You have to offer something unique.
This would be useful in the job market if you're good at content creation. Look what Tony did for LC Sign.

This should help protect their status as a feeder school for the porn industry.
