Man its funny to read this. I live in NOLA myself. I've always been the type to hold doors for those coming behind me. And never have I realized it more than just recently. I held the door for a black man and the look he gave me as he said thanks was so genuine it struck me as odd. I smiled and said your welcome and went on my way like normal, but that's the first time in a long time I've reflected on this simple instinctive act of kindness I perform 5+ times a week.

Hope more folks out there make a an extra effort to be courteous and kind to your fellow man.

Can't someone just wheel you away from danger ?

Hopefully danger happens at the top of a hill

No. I'm always aware of my surroundings.

I have always been vigilant and paid attention to my surroundings and I am not afraid. I just find myself looking further into things than I have in the past.

This was a discussion that came up this morning around the coffee bar and was curious what others here were thinking, especially with the majority being in Baton Rouge.

I wouldn't say I'm uneasy but I do find myself assessing who's standing around me a little bit more.

Not even a little, but I guess I have a little bit of a different perspective. I'm former military with deployments to Iraq. While we were over there, VBEIDs, IEDs, suicide bombers, mortars were a daily thing you hear in the background and sometimes up close.

I dunno, I can't bring myself to get nervous about a couple of wackos on the news when I was in a place where chaos was ongoing every day right outside the gate.

Nope. Just hit my local cigar shop ( black owned and operated) and had a wonderful conversation with the lady there. Good people. Most of the black folk I speak with don't hate cops and are disgusted with the cap going on.

Unless you're a robot, I don't know how in BR your awareness cannot at least be heightened. Military style shootings occurred within miles from many residents, on one of the most traveled roads, close to the police station. How can you not be at least concerned?

Op's question is whether you feel "uneasy" being in public.

My answer is NO

But there's a difference between "living in fear" and "being alert"... I am decidedly more alert than I was prior to the violence

Even before all of this, I have always maintained a certain level of being alert. I always try to be aware as possible of my surroundings. I guess my "being alert" adapts to whats going on.

I guess I can't say I never feel uneasy or will not allow someone to make me feel uneasy. There are areas I feel more comfortable being in than others, but I don't feel an added sense of uneasy.

There is always the chance of being in the wrong place at the wrong time. You never know when some deranged idiot will decide they want to attack a certain place for whatever reason.

zero percent. But I don't really go to things that may have issues I guess. If I went to protest and areas that may be high in crime or something....nah even then I wouldn't be uneasy in public

what is wrong with some of you? Millennials?
