Zippering in at the merge point is the safest, most efficient way to do it. a-hole drivers don't understand this.

Maybe when traffic is moving. When right lane traffic is stopped and people cruise up in the left lane wanting to get in at the head of the line, frick that shite.

Even LADOTD knows what's up.

Car B is doing it the intended way. Google a zipper merge.

Car A is directly contributing to further traffic backups and should be ticketed.

B which is the correct way, you angry frickers
Posted on 10/25/21 at 12:16 pm to finchmeister08
I play that game of Car B sometimes, but if no one lets me in, I blame myself for being an a-hole

I work in Luling, live in Metairie. Since they built that fricking airport and decided not to put a dedicated exit to it (I know they're currently building an airport exit for westbound traffic, but as far as I know there is not one planned for eastbound traffic), it backs up traffic down the 310. When I finally get to the I10, I'm constantly seeing people jump out of the line to exit at Loyola, drive 200 feet, then try to jump back into the Loyola exit line; blocking the flow of traffic behind them.
I fricking hate these people.
The only thing that infuriates me more is when, stuck in gridlock traffic, people who jump into the on ramp merging lane to get 3 car lengths ahead. If I see someone doing that, I wish nothing but bad things upon them. I also refuse to let them in front of me. I will wreck my truck before I let these assholes cut in front of me.

I'm probably Car A because I'm susceptible to social pressures but recognize that Car B is more efficient and don't get bent out of shape if someone does it.

this.
i'll admit, i didn't know about this "zipper merge". i can only assume there are more people that don't as well. while a majority get over ahead of time, theres usually only a handful that go all the way to the choke point. i can only assume they're not aware either and that they're being dicks.

I definitely don't sit there and block the ending lane trying to get in early. I'll pop into a spot if I see it while driving, or just go all the way and merge at the choke point if something doesn't open up.
The raging responses in here make me think a lot of you are on full tilt as soon as you get in your car.

I used to do the same, but now I'm car B. Zipper is the way to go.

That's completely backwards... when traffic is moving go ahead and merge in whenever. When traffic is backed up it's best to use as much roadway as possible and zipper merge.

I'm sorry, but we are too stupid to do it the right way.

Traffic models routinely prove that Car B actually helps traffic move faster through a bottleneck. The notion of car B being an a-hole is valid from a social standpoint as we have all grown up with the lesson of 'don't cut in line', but vehicle traffic is a strange animal.

People will say zipper merge, but the reality is that
1) The zipper merge was meant for when two lanes merge into one (think of a 4 lane highway going down to a two lane highway), not when one lane is closed for construction / blockage and you actually have to get all the way over.
2) Zipper merge only works if the people in the through-lane allow you to merge in at the last second. What usually happens is they do not, and the person in the ending lane then forces their way in, which often causes an additional accident.
