i can see how a zipper merge works in congested/stand still traffic like the Chick-Fil-A line, but when people are zipping by on the interstate at 70-90 mph, how can you trust everyone around you to know about a zipper merge?

Correct.

OP doesn’t know how to drive.

Car A blocks a lane and prevents overs from moving up and merging while also causing the flowing lane to stop again to allow a vehicle in.

If traffic isn't backing up and still cruising at interstate speeds, then there's no point to any of this... get on over when you want.

You’d rather everyone doing what car A is doing and leave an entire lane of roadway empty? How far back should these car As start merging, at the end of the traffic line? Why have a two lane highway at all?

B, If the design is for cars to merge earlier, they would have closed the lane further back.
People that stop to get over 1/2 mile before the lane ends are the sole reason for traffic behind the construction itself. You are holding an entire lane of traffic from advancing, thus creating the problem.

Car B is the way it is supposed to work if you had people on the road that actually knew how to drive. However, in order for B to be right you would need to have people not riding everyone's arse when you are unable to drive 10+ over the limit, realize that if you leave the proper distance between you and the car in front of you to allow B to happen, and have the merging vehicle not come to a complete stop before they merge (even if space allows them to do so, they will always stop completely).

However, because all of these are inevitable (plus a multitude of other reasons) every time this scenario comes to play it will occur anywhere in the US. As a result, I tend to be somewhere between Car A & B. With that said, you will need to go back at least another 1-2 miles before you see my wife's (no pics) car merging.

If they wanted you to merge where car A was getting in line, the cones would be back by car A….

I've explained it every way I can think of and, IMO, this is the simplest explanation. Yet, "car A" people still don't get it.
Further proof that society is falling apart due to ignorant people. We have reached the point of Darwin being outgunned by stupidity.

cant be allowing line jumpers to get ahead of you

many times i watch 5,6 up to 9 cars do this while one idiot up front keeps letting them cut in

its gotten to the point i will get out of line and run up 1/4 mile farther to cut back in because if you dont it adds 15 minutes to your journey if you dont

As another poster said, zipper merge is for slow moving or stop and go traffic.

I try to find a spot that I can slide into without much problem. I can't help it if some unhinged idiot acts like I called his momma a ho because I'm a couple feet in front of him now.

Zipper merge instructions/signs should be plastered all over our highways. Bc dumb arse drivers get so pissed at the people who do it correctly thinking we’re being the a-hole cutting you off at the last second.

Traffic engineers will tell you you should be car B.

Car A's enter too early and now you have one line of traffic stretching for miles as opposed to two lines merging at the merge point.

I had an opportunity some years back to watch computer models. The car A's of the world think they are doing the right thing but they actually extending the backlog and create more congestion.

Clearly safe merging is the most important but teh people who block the lane are also thinking they are being righteous when in fact the are creating the same backlog as the car Bs.

Much of the Car A mentality has been groomed my misleading media messages from reporters who don't know what they are talking about in local news outlets.

You can find newer stories over the last decade trying to explain to people the correct way.

If you make cars stop to let you in, you’re an arse. Zipper merge your butt in early enough to not stop flow.

In either scenario, you can be sure no turn-signals were being used. That's LA State Law. "At no time are you permitted to use your turn signals while operating a vehicle on any Louisiana roadway". Look it up...

B. I always drive to the end.

I also don't have a road ego and I let people in in-front of me. Not an issue.
