I’ve found that this only applies to tools, cereal, and soft drinks

Depends on the situation. If I need a tool for one time use, I go to harbor freight and get the cheapest that will do the job. However, if I intend to keep it long-term, I get snap-on that will last the rest of my life.

Yup

Hunting clothing I go cheap unless it's performance gear (cold weather/rain gear). I definitely do not pay any attention or pay more for a certain camp pattern.

In most things I'm buy once/cry once, though.

Depends. Tech changes quickly and buying for "life" is kind of idiotic for some products.

I'm buying a shite load of chinese made weapon lights and optics right now. Many are as good as American produced at less than half the price.

Depends on what it is.

I'm usually loyal to brands. But however if they don't have something I need, then I will cheap out instead of using a just as expensive alternative.

For example, TLF is my favorite brand of gym wear. If I need a new pair of shorts and they don't have any in stock that I like, I'll usually just order from gym shark instead of buying from Rhoback or Lululemon

I always buy premium shoes that will last for at least 18 months. Cheap sneakers last me only 2-3 months usually.

Get a solid brand, but a clearance model of sneaker. I did that while walking >3 miles daily. Would wear out the rubber in the sole every couple months, but the shoes were $50 instead of $125.

My last 5 pair of all purpose shoes are identical-sand color same size

I buy one pair a year

They retail for 150, but I can usually find them on eBay for around 60-80
Have a new pair coming in a few days

Yeah, it’s the tread that always makes me replace them

It really depends on if the cheap product will get the job done (and quality of job doesn’t matter) and not break.

For example, I bought a $2 can opener for the camp instead of the $15 one. It sucks and maybe takes twice the effort, but it opens cans and the extra effort is nothing.

A cheap jacket, on the other hand, won’t keep you as warm, won’t last as long, and won’t be as fashionable. Get the nicer one.

I'm 76 with 2 heart surgeries and one coming up, if Harbor Freight made a ventilator, I'd buy it. Hell, I buy bananas one at a time.

You almost always spend more money buying multiple cheap versions instead of one quality version. Not to mention the constant suffering through the cheap version

Yeah, it's harder and harder to know when you're paying for legitimate better quality vs. paying for a name.

The low end is usually more obvious.

I’m a buy once cry once person. If there is something I want I will do my research and plan on keeping it for a while. I hate cheap shite

I last remodeled my bathrooms in 98 and I bought delta white box fixtures and valves from a plumbing sully store. Paid a little more but you get brass valves instead the plastic shite that comes with Home Depot and Lowe’s Delta. This year we are remodeling again and I only have to buy new trim kits saving me a grand. Pay now or pay later up to you

Unfortunately I'm hard headed.

Buy cheap
Get pissed it doesn't work as needed or as precise as needed
Spend too much time figuring out how to use it anyway
Master the cheap tool
It breaks soon after
Spend lots of time trying to fix the tool I finally mastered

Depends on the product, but I'm generally a "buy once, cry once" guy when it comes to things that are important. Auto parts, shoes, and guns are things that I always pay a premium for to get quality.

Depends on the situation. I will by 2-3 Academy waders on sale, will last a long time and will still cost significantly cheaper than the top tier brands.

Cowboy boots I buy for life.
