I tend to buy the best I can afford first.
Sometimes though if it’s a new thing I’m trying to learn or figure out, I tend to go cheap so I know what the best should be.
Though I tend to skip first gen things. I prefer to let the kinks out first. What people who defriended me over not taking the covid shot didn’t understand. I let new things take their initial lap.

No I don't buy the best quality every time. Just depends on what it is. There are a few things I will not go cheap on such as power tools and equipment, shoes, appliances and a few other things. Yeah one thing I never go cheap on is tires.

buy for long term.
Dishwasher, don't need the best one, I just want my chances of a lemon to be as low as possible and the chances drop significantly once you get past Samsung and those overengineered options

As most have said it depends on the item.
One funny buy we made several years ago was our first babies mattress. We went with the cheaper one. Sales associate tells us the cheapest isn’t always the best. We said we understand. We both thought she meant to say cheaper is not always less expensive. That mattress made it through all 3 of our kids and 2 more of a family member. Turns out in this instance cheaper was better and less expensive.

There are at least three things you NEVER go cheap on, and then other things situationally.
My dad always told me to buy quality shoes and your mattress. After all, you spend at least 1/3 of your life with them. This advice has served me well.
On top of that, I'd add in to always buy quality garbage bags, 2 mil minimum. In fact, sometimes I even double bag with those. This will virtually eliminate any possible tears or spills you might ever encounter. And if you ever worry about varmints or animals getting into your trash, pour a little bit of diluted bleach or ammonia IN BETWEEN the two bags before you tie them up, or just give a few squirts from a spray bottle. Problem solved.
Good tool advice has already been given. Common use items - sockets, box/open end wrenches, pliers, etc - buy the best you can afford. One time use items like that three jaw pulley puller... go to Harbor Freight.

I go for whatever is the best value for my dollar spent. If that means I pay more for whatever product I’m buying, then I’m good with it. Take tires for example. I buy nothing but Michelin Defenders. I bought them for my truck, my wife’s SUV, my son’s truck, and when the factory tires on my daughter’s car need to be replaced, it isn’t even a question as to what I’ll buy. Sure, some other tires cost less. But the Defender will go 80k+ miles, ride great, and get great traction, even in pouring rain. Thus, I see value in the Michelin Defender. So that’s the only tire I’ll buy.

chinese made weapon optics right now. Many are as good as American produced at less than half the price.
No they aren't as good. Easily proven. If all you do is shoot at 100 yds and set it and forget it, maybe. I buy good optics.

If I am going to use a tool once or twice, then Harbor Freight is good for me. If I need it to make a living, I am buying quality.

Premium US shoes for $300+, factory rebuild every few years, heavy use for 8 years so far. Similar models are $400 now.

I've bought cheap and it worked for awhile until it didn't.

Ah yes. The old anecdotes with no objective info.
I've got plenty and they work as well as the expensive shite.
"Buy more optic than gun" is a retards philosophy unless youre hunting out to 600 plus yards regularly.

Nah good glass is paramount, can a once or twice a weekend per year hunter do fine with Chinese junk, yes. I’m not taking that shite up in elk country though.

Harbor freight has gotten me out of some jams with their cheap shite

It wouldn't hold zero and fogged up on me. Nikon $300 scope. Used a cheap 3x9 Simmons for years. It decided it wouldn't hold zero anymore.
You don't need a $3000 dollar scope for anything.
I do know extensive field testing was done on plenty of scopes including drop tests. Many cheap scopes fail if you plan to turn turrets or drop them.
But Yea, a $200 scope will work for most people.

Indeed. Most "glass" is good though unless youre a long distance precision shooter.
I wonder how many people here own Holosun products which are made at the same factory these cheaper items are made?
