re: Are Tundras still among the best reliable trucks?

You pretty much answered your question in your post.
Tundras are the most reliable but lack the bells & whistles. Simple as that. I personally love the design of the Tundra but I know it's not as flashy as other trucks. Definitely looking for to the next gen though which SHOULD be caught up in terms of design and tech.

Yes they are reliable.
Very.
Friend’s brand new $75k Ford Platinum is back at the dealership. To his amazement, they’re telling him they can’t figure the problem. Runs at only 10mph. Computer related.
Apparently the Platinum model has very complex digital systems.

why do the Tundras get such (comparatively) shitty mileage compared to Ford/GM?
I keep seeing/hearing the Tundra is 13 MPG. But my Silverado is getting 20-21 MPG with the V8 engine.

you would have 5 stories of reliable Silverados, and 8 stories of reliable F-150s for every reliable Tundra story.

There should be way more stories of reliable domestic trucks...they outsell Tundras 13:1. I've owned both, and new trucks will be reliable (for the most part), regardless of what you get. Most people on here aren't going to drive 15+ year old vehicles. For those who do, the probability of getting one that will be reliable at that age is greater with a Toyota.

Tundras are hands down the best truck on the road.

Seems like every year I hear the new Tundra will he coming out the next year.

Was watching Autoline a couple months ago. It is basically a talk show with auto industry executives.
Anyway, the reason they gave that the Tundra has gone so long between redesigns is not because it is "awesome". It was a calculated financial decision, and a shortsighted one at that. Now Toyota, missing out on the insane profits of domestic full-size pickups, has made a complete ground-up redesign a top priority.
It is long overdue, but unfortunately will make top trim levels jump by at least $10K+.

I get 14.9- 15.1. Not good but I’ve never gotten 13.
I don’t know why it’s so low.

5.7 V8
I have the 5.0 in my F150 and I get about 17. It's not that great IMO. My 2002 silverado with the 5.3 got about 16, so at least the V8's haven't improved that much in mileage, nor will they.
The next gen Tundra will have a Twin Turbo option, so you will see a Tundra that is going to get improved mileage numbers.

Got a 2020 Tundra and I love it.

This is just a myth Toyota cultists push. People that take care of their shite have shite that lasts a long time. This isn't the 90s anymore.

I consistently get 16.0-16.5, but I do a lot of hwy driving.

No they don't . They have a double cab with a 6.5 ft and 8 ft. and only the Crew Max with a 5.5 ft. Double cab is four doors still though and the back is adequate for your average person.
I think it is a nomenclature issue. It has four full sized doors, and I have plenty of room to sit in the back. I am well over 6'. He pulled it into a parking place and it hung out almost 2' on both ends, with the hitch.
Four doors is not called a crew cab anymore??

The double cab's door are no where close to a "full size" door.
And try putting a rear facing car seat in the back of one and tell me again about all the space you have. That goes for all the "double cab" "super cab" "extended cab" trucks, not just Toyota.

4 real doors are. The Tundra Double Cab isn't that.

I always figured that Toyota somewhat conceded the truck market to the domestics when the 2007 model didn’t close the sales gap.

My driving is in Houston, mix of heavy traffic and freeway speeds. Plus I have a lead foot. 15mpg is actually better than I expected since so I kept hearing about 13 mpg.

The 2 big reasons Tundras get shitty mileage
1. Gearing. Almost every Tundra 2008-newer has a very short rear axle ratio. I believe they’re all 10.5-inch rear ends with 4.30:1 gears on the newer ones.
2. The 3UR-FE (5.7L Toyota V8) doesn’t have cylinder deactivation like literally all of the other competitors do. It’s a big high-compression engine that runs on 8 cylinders 100% of the time. Combine that with short gearing, and you get shitty fuel mileage compared to the competition.

My 2012 F150 FX2 with the 5.0 didn't have cylinder deactivation and got over 17 in the city. Best highway tank was 23 and change.

very reliable. lotta power.
gas mileage is lagging because the engine/drivetrain hasn't changed since 04, but that's what you'll give up for reliability.
Toyota's remote start is trash, and their infotainment/tech is way behind the curve.
BUT a tundra shouldn't have a hiccup for 150k, and that back glass roll down is pretty sweet.
