The rest stops on the Natchez Trace Parkway are a hidden gem. The most pleasant public shits I’ve ever taken.

We use them to eat healthy food that we brought and to get some fresh air and walk a bit.

We frequently drive up I 95 and head west on I 26 to Asheville. There is nothing from North Georgia all the way through South Carolina. Thank goodness there are rest stops. It’s all under construction and the exits have broken down old gas stations from the 60’s.

The rest areas in MS actually seem well maintained. Seems like one of the few things state government does well.

In the middle of nowhere on I 20 in Mississippi when you can't wait another 30 miles to take a shite, they are not obsolete.

They are not obsolete.

Not everyone wants to stop at a truck stop or other commercial services.

Rest areas are quicker, quieter and cleaner than 90% of the commercial alternatives.

Hate that many states have reduced the number.

I always like finding the old ones still open on secondary roads. Brings back memories.

Louisiana, I am looking at you too for that half assed access to the Louisiana rest area that you can only access coming into Louisiana. Leaving, you are own your own and hopefully you make it to Mississippi.
Because the exit for the MS rest stop would exist with or without that rest stop.

The only reason an exit exists in LA between the MS state line and I-10/12/59 interchange is for the “welcome to Louisiana” rest stop. Otherwise, everything between Slidell and MS state line is swamp

In Mississippi, there is a security guard on duty at most or all of them. They all have that cute little white shack.

The Welcome Center in Woodville on 61 is perfect. We stop there several times a month. 24/7 security and clean bathrooms.

FWIW Illusions has been repurposed into an Events center for receptions and parties and shite.

Curious to consider which state's rest stops are considered the best. Most state's "welcome center/ rest stops" are generally better than middle of the state rest stops, IMO.

I don't think any one state's rest stop is much better than others. at least around the Southeast.

Oklahoma allowed fast food like BK McD to build in the center median along the Indian Nations Turnpike a couple of decades ago. They are near the toll booths so they fit in nicely with the need to slow down or before reaching the limit.

I liked them as before it was pretty much just ranch grassland without many trees. Took refuge in one during a tornadic storm that had angry dark forest green clouds.

Most states have converted to the state line model haven’t they? I know we usually stop at the one across the Alabama state line when we go to Orange beach with the kiddos.

You may chose not to stop at them but tons of people do and if you ever look at them at night, every space they have available is full with 18 wheelers for the night

The one on I49 just north of Opelousas must have gotten a memo to cut costs because none of the parking lot lights were on the last two times that I’ve stopped there.

Our state auditor issued one of these cutting wasteful spending reports
If you are talking about Louisiana wa-a-a-ay back when, I remember seeing a passing reference to some organization like the "Interstate Exit Gas Station Operators Association" claiming how much money could be saved by letting that function be privatized.

Which was of course served by those operators and their stinky hell-hole bathrooms.

RIP to the many simple "pee-and-go" stops along I-10 and I-12.

Negative. Most rest stops are clean and safe (security) and if I just need to stretch my legs and let the family hit the restroom.

I don't know about most states, but Louisiana did years ago when they shut down all the sites. The only state-run rest areas left that I can think of are the welcome centers at the state lines (and the one on I-10 in the Basin). The properties were/are all DoTD.

If memory serves, the Pennsylvania Turnpike leases property at their rest stops to fast food places, convenience stores and truck stops. I would think those pay for themselves quite easily. If so, I don't know why Louisiana wouldn't do that at least on 10 and 20.

Only in our shithole state...

Otherwise, truckers are parking on the exits like they do here.
