Looking to eventually buy a chainsaw. I know stihl and husqvarna are some of the gotos. But I'm not ever gonna use it a ton. Just wanna be able to cut down a tree every now and then for some firewood.
I used my neighbors poulan today. It fired right up and worked good.

It's weird to say, but the less you use something, the better one you'll need.
That Poulan will crank up the first time you use it fine, but leave that thing in your garage for six months and the POS won't crank.
A stihl will crank every time.
During times you aren't tree cutting, you could always use the chainsaw to open beers

For occasional use, using gas treatment and non ethanol gas is probably more important than chainsaw brand.

It worked well. The Poulan you used that belonged to your neighbor worked well. frick.

Stihl is supposedly the brand to buy. Just stay away from the 250ms. Carburetor is a sensitive bitch.

I have never had anything but a stihl, and don't see a reason to change that now. Stihl does now make some cheaper model especially for homeowner use...I would probably check around to see if you can find someone who has used one.

MS250 is a great saw, nothing wrong with the carburetor (usually Zama units which are in everything and work great). I have a mid-1990's Stihl 025 and other than regular maintenance, keeping a sharp chain on it, and blowing the saw down with the air compressor after each use, I've only had to replace the oiler pump and a fuel vent line. Everything else is original.

I burned up one of those Wild Thing saws in maybe 20 minutes when I was an arborist. My padnuh brought it, and he handed it to me as I went onto a roof. It started smoking, locked up, and then I chucked it onto the driveway. Went into the trash after that.
My dad had the same one, and the anti-vibration on it sucked. It sucks on all cheap saws, and your hands will be tingling at the end of the day.
Get a Stihl. Huskies run too high of rpm, and don't make torque like Stihls. Plus, the parts are a PITA to get. I'd recommend a top-handle Stihl like the 193T. I used to run a 200/201, but the top handle saws are the bee's knees. So easy to use

This is the correct answer. If you buy a Poulan you need to run it out of fuel every time you use it. Take it apart and clean it after every use, then hope your plastic fuel line doesn't fall apart after the second summer.

Saws started getting finicky when manufacturers transitioned to greener EPA carbs/exhaust/etc. Same with small gasoline engines. It took years to design them properly, and they still don't work as well as they used to.
The pro models don't have problems though

Just drop a grand on a Stihl

I have an old Stihl Farmboss 390. It cranks every time and is really more than I need as a casual user.

I went the cheap route first. Mistake. Took a brand new Poulan Pro 18" bar back to Home Depot today. Fired right up, ate through the one large limb. Cut great, ran great. Second time I tried to start it the cord pulled right out on about the 4th pull. Bought a Husqvarna online at Lowes. Pick it up tomorrow. Much better saw but you get what you pay for. Stihl is the best but pricey if you don't need it often. Husqvarna is a great second choice. Highly rated. Guess I'll see tomorrow.
