Who gives a shite? Do you like driving it? They’re certainly a ton of fun, so who cares what some other mouth-breather thinks.
That said, be careful about the year and relative condition and look up Boxster/Cayman IMS bearing. It’s a somewhat common issue from ‘97-‘08 with. It affected both the 911 and Boxster. It’s more rare than the internet would have you believe, but expensive to fix and potentially a giant pain in the arse. Parts alone are around $600-$700 and the labor with be in the thousands. This is not a repair that you’ll want to take on if you’re looking to just tinker.

I don't consider Boxters to be a true Porsche

An LC500 is not a very good alternative to the drive of a 986 Boxster that Lexus is hauling 1,400 pounds more. Plus it is $100k if he wanted to spend that much he could get a fairly new 911 convertible which is in a different league as a driver's car.

All depends on what kind of driving shoes you have.

It isn't all that difficult to take your little sports car to the track or out on some twisty country roads.

Don’t care what anyone thinks. The 718 turbo is a badass sports car.

LC500 is a gorgeous looking and sounding car but nothing like a Boxter and much more expensive for what OP is looking for.
Think others have covered the IMS issue, otherwise I’ve always heard great things about the Boxter and the insane Porsche used market hasn’t quite gotten to the 986 Boxter. Another option if you’re willing to spend a little more would be a 996 911. Think these are about to start going up in value if they haven’t already.
Edit: Talk to the guys at NolaSport. They can probably source you a car and do a thorough PPI.

The problem is not that they look ghey, the problem is you become a cliche.

Sell the boat.
Sell the big D whatever that it.
Ride the motorcycle more. No car compares to the thrill of it. Except sex.

I believe that means he’s divorced. It don’t mean Dallas.

I’m not a big fan of the first gen Boxster but later gens look nice. Would certainly prefer the Cayman but if not that then a Boxer S. Not sure how tuner friendly those are to “tinker“ on but here’s another vote for the S2000. Honda reliability, easy to tinker on, and has a lot of aftermarket support. May be the sweet spot for you with it being bigger than a Miata but I think slightly smaller than the boxer with great toss ability. I was buddies with a guy that had one and he used to auto cross and track it with the Mardi Gras Miata club. Thing was a screamer at 9K redline.

I also want a car I can tinker on
As the owner of a 944S2 in the past I can tell you to be prepared to get the weirdest set of metric tools you've ever seen to properly work on the car. To work on a Porsche you have to be part contortionist.
Still, they are a blast to drive. I have never felt as connected to the road throught hte steering wheel as I did with that little Porsche.
