LOL, good for you for not taking offense at my snarky comment.
I've driven a few Boxters and they always left me "meh" like a next step Miata (not that there's anything wrong with that).
I've had a couple 911's, the "real" air cooled ones, and they are fantastic cars but much less forgiving for driver errors.
I've only driven a Cayman once and have nothing pos/neg to say about it.
You mentioned the Lotus, a mechanic who I used when I lived in the South specialized in Euro cars and quipped once that if it weren't for Jaguar and Lotus he'd be out of business.
For something that's less of a head turner but a lot of fun to drive while still being daily practical and forgiving of a driver who doesn't spend a lot of track time, the BMW M3 and M5 are hard to beat and both are available as convertibles. They don't mind driving slowly as a daily vehicle but really wake up when pushed.

Quality and performance wise a 718 RS is gonna be pretty hard to beat.
And you don't even have to think about the money. Those things are gonna hold their value well and probably won't be long before they start appreciating year over year.
Regardless, if you have the scratch and the connections to get a 718 RS you probably aren't posting on a louisiana centric message board at 8:30 AM on a weekday.
I think under $100k an argument can be made for the Boxster.
At the $200k range, most value image as well as performance. The Boxster RS probably gets respect from Porschephiles, but at the end of the day it's still a Boxster no matter how you slice it. Cannot imagine buying a Boxster over a low mile GT3/GT2.

I’d buy a 2008 BMW Z4 M. Things are rockets.

I kind of knew but I just want a fun midlife crisis convertible while I still have hair on my head .
If you are looking for something affordable and pretty much bulletproof have you considered a Toyota MR2 Spyder with the 2ZZ GE engine swap? They are a lot of fun and often overlooked mid engine.

The Boxter RS is not $200k and it is a 718 Boxter with the GT3 engine. Boxter is true mid engine, 911 is rear engine. 911 GT3 will set you back more than a Boxter RS.

I'm aware what they are, I've had 911s in the garage.
The Boxster RS starts at $160k+ before options, and options add up really quick.
Used low mile GT3/GT2 can be had for less than $200k as I stated. One would be a fool to not consider them in that price range.

I was pointing out they are two different platforms with the same engine. If you’re buying for cache, then yes get a GT3. Someone looking to track their car might have a justifiable reason to go for the Boxter over the 911.
Even though he doesn’t track his car, Matt Farrah comes to mind. Spent 911 money to custom order a 718 Boxter and sent it to Dinan for a hot-rodded motor.

Plus the 80k+ ADM

Maybe a 996, but that’s not really a comparable car to a 2024 spyder RS

Having hang out with Porschephiles who own these Boxster/Cayman GT4/RS, etc all own other 911s IN ADDITION to theese cars. Not a single one of them would trade/sell their 911 if it meant only owning one of them.

It saeems like everything on a Porsche is an option. They have to charge something to make all those buttons actually do something.

Not sure what your price range is, but the all around consensus from drivers is that the Boxster (718) is great to drive.
You could also look at the Jaguar F-Type or my personal favorite, the BMW M3/M4. Though I'm not sure how "tinkerable" any of those would be. The electronics have gotten pretty sophisticated in everything now.
I'm casually looking for an E46 M3 but the prices have skyrocketed and I can't justify it right now.

Everyone who doesn't drive an F150 is a gay nf beta.

The Porsche is not for guys who have lifts.
If you really know what you’re doing get a ‘86 Pontiac Fiero Gt with the supercharger. Another solid choice is the old Toyota MR2 mid engine. Never liked the Mazda cars even after Ford bought em out.
One of the best nights of my life was driving the French ambassador’s daughter in his supercharged Fiero around San Francisco with the pedal locked to the floor…

Formerly owned a 2005 Boxster S, currently own a 2001 Carrera C2.
The Boxster was fun as hell to drive, quick off the line, great top-end, great handling.
The Carrera is just fun to drive, slow off the line but great top-end. Much easier to work on (236k miles) as the engine compartment is much easier to access.
I recommend that you either know someone with a tow truck or join AAA. I have had to tow my Carrera three times. Fuel pump died in the drive-thru at Chick-fil-A, AOS (air-oil separator) went out on the interstate and the water pump went out once on the interstate. Not too bad for 13 years of driving pleasure.
There is nothing on these cars that can break that someone hasn't posted a YT video on how to repaid or posted on a Porsche forum, so plenty of help on DIY projects.
My only caution would be to make sure that if you get a convertible, get a model year with a glass rear window and not the plastic as it becoming more and more difficult to find someone to replace that plastic back window.

They definitely aren't worth what their prices commanding right now. E46 may be the best M car that BMW has ever made, but they just aren't holding up over time. I had an '03 that I owned from '06-'09 and it was a great driver, but the maintenance and repair got to the point that I was maintaining it more than driving it. Subframe cracking, VANOS issues, etc. Mine had low mileage, I sold it with 55k miles, bought it with 28k and it was a needy car when I got it at 3 years old with relatively low miles.
The subframe cracking problem is pretty much universal at this point. As they get close to 100k miles rod bearings will become an issue. So many of them have spotty histories at this point as well. Rarely will you find a 1 or 2 owner car with maintenance records, and maintenance records are absolutely necessary unless you want a money pit. Over the years, I have thought about getting another one, but have sadly let this one go because of the long term issues and maintenance.
Post this era of BMW, they went away from being an engineering company and became a marketing company. As needy as BMW's were back then, they are even worse now and definitely something I wouldn't buy used.

I would LOVE an air cooled 911 but the market is insane on them right now.
The car I most regret selling was a '98 Arena red 993 Turbo. I bought it new and sold it in 2006 with 24k on the clock. It was a handful to drive at the limit but a magnificent best. I sold it to buy a 996.

The boxster will give you many smiles-per-gallon, who cares what some dbag thinks? It's still a thriller.
The boxster prototype was an amazingly beautiful car channelling so much of the 550, but when it came to production it some how got lost.
What about a Beck's speedster or 550 with an air-cooled 4? You get a very cool car and what the boxster always wanted to be. You avoid the IMS bearing fear too.
I'm an air-cooled guy. I'd go older P-car every time.
I used to put a car cover over my 72T in the garage, but life is too short, when I'm not driving it I love seeing it.
