It’s not always how to change something, Sometimes it is knowing what to change.

So you needed someone else to troubleshoot it for you but don't want to pay for that. Got it, cheap arse.

My washer stopped working. I checked myself, but got the professionals to come.

Turns out the lid lock is faulty and needs to be changed. He quoted me 282 dollars to change it. I asked him how much is the part. He quoted me 170.

I googled the part and its is 56 dollars and takes about 10 minutes to change. I called his company and told him to cancel that shite.

282 for someone to show up and install anything is pretty damn close to reasonable.

He won’t come back and tell us. We know he will get the wrong part too.

How much do you think this diagnosis is worth?

Using Youtube vids and DIY forums I have been able to fix most anything needing a repair. But, occasionally I have to give up, but not often.

Not only that, but the washer will never be the same because he won't be able to put it back together the same.

It will have a new rattle or noise.

Napoleon is not going to like this thread.

Napoleon would have told him where to get the part from online, how much it should cost AND how to change it. And then fussed at him for calling a repairman.

In the service industry you are using companies as " bird dogs". Pay a diagnostic to be told what part is faulty and then you try buying online and fixing yourself. Do you know what overhead is or the cost of paying a quality technician or how much a fully stocked repair van cost to operate? How much is yearly cost to train guys and keep their certifications up? No you think you should only have to pay a few dollars over cost. Won't be long before reputable companies refuse to come out. I fire customers like you as fast as I come across them.

One of the repair places actually told a friend of ours to bring the oven to them and they would repair it. It was an oven mounted in a cabinet.

Appliance repair companies are a rip off

In alot of instances, yes, they are. However, most people pay the markup for convenience.

It’s not a “ripoff,” it’s just the amount of money they’re willing to fix your shite for. Don’t want to pay it, do it yourself. No hard feelings. If enough people agree with you, they’ll go out of business. If not, you can still do it yourself and he can continue to do business with people whose time is worth more than yours.

I learned my lesson about ordering parts online. If I know what the problem is, and I think I can fix it, I call my longtime local appliance sales and service place and ask them to order the part for me. They will give me a call when it comes in and I will go pick it up. If I have a question about how to fix it, they will answer it. They will not, however, refund the part if it isn't the problem.

The only time I ordered something from one of the online supply houses was when I needed to change out suspension springs on our washer. I ordered them, waited a week for them to come in, and knew there was no way in hell those springs could be in that box. Instead, I received a replacement refrigerator drawer. I called my usual service people and had the parts in two days.

FWIW a legit reason the part was more was because repairmen use part warehouses that are basically middle men looking to make a profit also. Some parts they sell for a reasonable amount, some they don't. Repairmen don't price shop, they call one person, get the part, and move on.

As far as labor, people are pushing for $15/ hour labor for unskilled labor. If you want someone worth a damn that's going to drive to your location, its a heck of a lot more.

service side (which i mostly all labor) is between $55 & $110 (depending on the trade) an hour billable (company has to make money off the tech and cover their overhead. then they will mark up the parts as well.

likely a 4 hour minimum for time to drive there, diagnose, then go buy the part and come back and install.

4hrs at $55/hr would be $220. $50 part + taxes + 15% mark-up puts ypu right at the $282 range....

looks like a fair price to me. so instead of having a working washer today, you will wait on amazon to ship you the part then have to come home from work and install it, all the while your wife will be bitching about not being able to do the laundry.....

last time this happened to me i just bought a new washer.... cant put a price on a happy wife.....
